Young Learners Get Real-World View into Professions
OXNARD – Twelve local businesses will host students from the Oxnard Union High School District Linked Learning academies for a job shadowing project aimed at introducing young people to potential career paths aligned with a National Job Shadow Day.
The visit will take place around the county on Thursday, February 2nd from 8:45 am – 11:00 am.
Groups of students will tour the business, learn about its programs, and each will have an opportunity to conduct a one-on-one interview with staff members based on his or her educational path and field of interest.
Local businesses participating in this National Job Shadow day include Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin, Applied Powercoat, Boys and Girls Club of Greater Oxnard and Port Hueneme, Calleguas Municipal Water District, Camarillo Health Care District, County of Ventura Public Works Department and General Services, Courtyard by Marriott, Oxnard, NAVFAC, PTI Industries, Radio Lazer, and St. John’s Regional Hospital.
According to Bijou Beltran, Director of Career Education at Oxnard Union High School District (OUHSD), “This event is the beginning of many great future collaborations with our business and industry partners. We know our students will benefit greatly from this experience.”
The Camarillo Health Care District will be hosting 10 students from Hueneme High School. “This is a fantastic and innovative program, and we’re very pleased to participate,” says Kara Ralston, CEO at the District. “It’s my hope this experience will offer insight to career options in health care.”
The project is part of the Alliance for Linked Learning, a collaborative effort by the Ventura County Civic Alliance and OUHSD to expose young learners to potential careers early on by offering industry-specific Academies at the district’s seven high schools. The four-year academy program allows students to complete specialized elective courses meant to instill entry-level skills in a variety of industry fields related to business.
