VENTURA — In 2020, Renny Doyle, known as “The Detailer of Air Force One,” and The Detail Mafia had to skip what would have been their 17th consecutive year detailing Air Force One. This year, the tradition continues. A carefully selected team of 30 incredible detailers, a third of them first-time team members, will carry out the important task of preserving the Museum of Flight’s Air Force One, B-29 and a few other historic aircraft. The project is scheduled for July 11-16, 2022.

Local auto detailer and small business owner, Oscar Hernandez, is among the elite team of 30 selected this year. Oscar owns Eight O Five Detail Shop located in Ventura, California. Shortly after being honorably discharged from the Marine Corps in 2016, Oscar couldn’t sit still for long. “I came home, started my business, joined the Chamber and give back to my community whenever I can,” says Hernandez. “I’ve worked hard and pushed myself to detailing excellence, and my selection to this team is the culmination of that.”

This year, the renowned detailers will continue the preservation of five significant and historic aircraft that they have been restoring over the past two decades:

  • Boeing VC-137B SAM 970 “Air Force One”
  • Boeing B-29 Superfortress “T-Square 54”
  • Concorde G-BOAG “Alpha Golf”
  • Boeing 727 “Serial No. 001”
  • Lockheed 1049G Super Constellation “Connie”

Doyle chooses his team members very carefully from The Detail Mafia, a group of some of the most prestigious and highly skilled detailers in the world that he has certified over the years through his Detailing Success training program. Many of them are senior members of the team that go back to the original restoration project in 2003, and he also tries to bring in at least 10 first-time team members or “rookies” every year who have proven themselves meticulous paint correction and polishing craftsmen.

All Air Force One Team members are volunteers — successful detailing business owners who pay their own way to Seattle and donate their time and skills to the project, as they consider it their patriotic duty.

About the Aircraft

Boeing VC-137B “Air Force One”

Air Force One is a specially built Boeing 707-153 known as SAM (Special Air Missions) 970. It was delivered in 1959 as the first presidential jet powered aircraft and served presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon. SAM 970 remained active in the presidential fleet until 1996. For more than a decade, it lived on the open tarmac at Seattle’s Museum of Flight.

Boeing B-29 Superfortress “T-Square 54”

T-Square 54 is a Boeing B-29 Superfortress that fought in the Pacific during World War II, flying at least 37 combat missions with the 875th Bomb Squadron, 498th Bomb Group. The B-29 was the most capable bomber of World War II. It was two B-29s that dropped the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan in 1945, helping to end the World War II.

Concorde G-BOAG “Alpha Golf”

First flown in April of 1978 and delivered to British Airways in 1980, The Museum’s Concorde known as “Alpha Golf” was the eighth British-built production Concorde. On its retirement flight to the Museum of Flight on November 5, 2003, Alpha Golf set a New York City-to-Seattle speed record of 3 hours, 55 minutes, and 2 seconds.

Boeing 727 “Serial No. 001”

One of the world’s classic airliners, the Boeing 727 was built to carry on the successful legacy of its forerunner, the 707. Its production run extended from 1963 to 1984, producing a total of 1,832 units that were flown by more than 100 different airlines. It was the world’s best-selling passenger jet in its time, until it was surpassed by the next generation of airliners, the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320. The Museum’s airplane was the first 727 ever produced.

Lockheed 1049G Super Constellation “Connie”

The elegant Lockheed Constellation was born from requirements put forth in 1939 by Howard Hughes for Transcontinental and Western Air (TWA) Lines. The 1049G “Super G” was the most successful version of the Super Constellations and one of the last great piston-engine airliners. The Museum’s Constellation was delivered to Trans-Canada Airlines in 1954 as a 1049C and was later converted to the 1049G standard. The aircraft retired from flying in 1965.
