Latino Links: Political Trends

The Tequila Party is coming to a state near year.

Latinos seeking to counter the influence on immigration policy by the tea party movement have launched the movement with the slogan “Your shot at change,” according to a report in The Wichita Eagle by writer Dion Lefler.

The tequila party’s goal is to register and mobilize as many Hispanic voters as possible during the 2012 election season, Lefler reported.

Dates and details have not been set yet, but the basic premise is a national tour of Latino entertainers, aimed a drawing crowds to encourage Hispanic participation in the political process.

“We’re starting to look at legislators who are anti-immigrant-anything and cater to the tea party,” said Rep. Louis Ruiz, D-Kansas City, who will be leading the effort at the state level.

Tucson will serve as the group’s home base, founder Dee Dee Garcia-Blase stated in a report on KGUN9 in Tucson.

“The siesta is over amigos,” said Garcia-Blasé as she announced the group’s official launch to a local and national campaign. “The fiesta begins today.”
