La Colonia Youth Boxing Gym target for United Way’s Latino Action Team project on Sept. 28

Fifth District Supervisor John C. Zaragoza

OXNARD — The La Colonia Youth Boxing Gym is this year’s target for Fifth District Supervisor John Zaragoza and United Way’s Latino Action Team “Day of Caring” project, Zaragoza reported Thursday in a media release.

United Way volunteers will be painting, landscaping, cleaning and installing a new boxing ring.

The project starts at 8 a.m. Saturday, 28 and ends when we finish, Zaragoza reported.

The gym is on East First Street in Oxnard’s La Colonia neighborhood. This is a former fire station turned into a youth boxing gym organized by the Oxnard Police Athlete League (PAL). The gym has been the home to many boxers who have gone on to hold World Championships.

Supervisor Zaragoza said he has long time supporter of youth boxing and wants to give the kids in La Colonia a place they can be proud of.

“Every year we pick a project that helps the community. One year we packaged food for distribution in the neighborhood, another year we installed smoke detectors at a mobile home park, and this year the La Colonia gym needs a real good refurbishing,” Zaragoza said.
