VENTURA — On Thursday, June 6, from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., Ventura Police officers and staff will take to the streets to champion the Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run, carrying the iconic “Flame of Hope” through Ventura in a powerful display of unity and support.
The non-competitive relay begins at the historic Ventura City Hall and continues east through the city, where Ventura PD will pass the torch to the Oxnard Police Department, ensuring the flame’s journey through Ventura County continues uninterrupted.
“The Flame of Hope is more than just a symbol; it embodies the resilience and dedication of Special Olympics athletes who inspire us with their commitment and perseverance,” said Sergeant Ryan Reynosa, Special Olympics Liaison with the Ventura Police Department. “Being part of Team Ventura PD, we are dedicated to raising funds and fostering awareness and acceptance for these extraordinary athletes.”
Run schedule & route:
- 7:30 a.m. – Gather at Ventura City Hall steps
- 8:00 a.m. – Depart City Hall, head east on Poli Street, south on Chestnut Street, east on Thompson Street to Main Street
- 8:30 a.m. – Arrive at Pacific View Mall, continue east on Main Street to Telephone Road, south on Portola Road
- 8:50 a.m. – Short break at the Ventura Police Department
- 9:00 a.m. – Resume run, east on Ralston Street, south on Johnson Drive
- 9:20 a.m. – Hand off torch to Oxnard Police Department at the US 101 footbridge over the Santa Clara River
Residents should note that the Torch Run will affect traffic flow. It’s advisable to review the route and plan alternative routes for the morning commute.
The Law Enforcement Torch Run is the largest grassroots fundraiser and public awareness vehicle for the Special Olympics. The event culminates in the Special Olympics Southern California Summer Games in Long Beach on June 8-9, 2024.
The 2024 Law Enforcement Torch Run is sponsored by Walden Surfboards, Mile 26 Running Company, The Wharf, Art’s Corner Café, Finney’s Crafthouse, the Ventura Police Officers’ Association, and the Ventura Police Community Foundation.
