SANTA BARBARA — Hospice of Santa Barbara (HSB) has adjusted to the new realities that come with COVID-19 by creating their illuminate Speaker Series – a series that started last year which not only addresses aspects of the COVID-19 pandemic but also offers help on how to navigate through this new reality.

One way the organization has transitioned to serve this past year is by providing helpful resources to our community and beyond as they relate to COVID-19 through this virtual series that features a new world-renowned speaker every month. Past speakers include Roshi Joan Halifax, Frank Ostaseski, Katy Butler, Sharon Salzberg, Dr. BJ Miller, Dr. Sunita Puri and Jenée Johnson.

Next up on the illuminate Speaker Series line-up is Daniel Goleman, who will present Emotional Intelligence in the Challenging Times of a Pandemic on Wednesday, June 23rd at 6:00 PM PDT. The event is free, but registration is required.

No one has been left untouched by the effects of living during a global pandemic. While we have navigated this time with technology and new practices to keep us safe, there is a burgeoning concern for the short and long-term ramifications of distance and isolation will have on us all. Furthermore, as we reach the other side of the pandemic and a hopeful return to “normalcy,” how do we prepare ourselves to adapt and flourish?

In this engagement, Daniel Goleman, the leading authority on emotional intelligence, will discuss why emotional intelligence is needed now more than ever and how to preserve and support our relationships and connections in the time of a pandemic that limits social interactions. And, ultimately, how we can prepare ourselves and relearn critical social skills as we make it to the other side of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Goleman’s Emotional Intelligence was on The New York Times best sellers list for a year-and-a-half. Named one of the 25 “Most Influential Business Management Books” by TIME, it has been translated into 40 languages. HBR called emotional intelligence (EI) “a revolutionary, paradigm-shattering idea.” His follow-up, Working with Emotional Intelligence, outlined the importance of EI in professional settings.

“As we navigate going back to a similar life before the pandemic, it is important we have the right resources and tools to help guide us,” said David Selberg, CEO of Hospice of Santa Barbara. “We are very excited to have Daniel Goleman join us and give us some of his tips and tricks that can help us through the process.”

As we all know, people are reeling from this world-wide crisis emotionally, socially, and economically. People have shared a variety of intense feelings they are experiencing during this time, among them: fear, deep sadness, anxiety, grief, uncertainty over the present and what the future holds, vulnerability, despair, anger, hopelessness. HSB will have a new nationally-known speaker every month.

The series continues through 2021 with Nora McInerny in July, and Pico Iyer in August. Hospice of Santa Barbara would like to give a special thanks to Natalie Orfalea Foundation and Lou Buglioli, Ridley-Tree Cancer Center, and Santa Barbara Foundation for sponsoring this event.
