Sept. 24 — TEDxSantaBarbara Announces Powerful Event Series Leading To November Conference

Local Adventures and Intimate Salons Provide Monthly Opportunities to Spread Powerful Ideas

SANTA BARBARA — TEDxSantaBarbara, a locally organized offshoot of the international TED nonprofit, announces two new offerings to engage locals in spreading and activating powerful ideas year-round: Adventures and Salons. These monthly events tease topics that will be discussed at the annual TEDxSantaBarbara conference on Saturday, November 16 at the New Vic Theatre, 33 W. Victoria St. from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Event Schedule

  • TEDxSantaBarbaraSalon: Words. Words. Words. Tuesday, September 24, 7 – 9 p.m. at Impact Hub Chapala Center, 1221 Chapala St. ($20)

Run 100% by volunteers, with all financing from community partnerships, the annual TEDxSantaBarbara conference has attracted impactful speakers from across the globe since 2010. Part of the larger international TED movement, all 4,000+ TEDx locations throughout the world are dedicated to “Ideas Worth Sharing.” In this spirit, TEDxSantaBarbara founders Mark Sylvester and Kymberlee Weil (a husband/wife team), conceived of the Salons and Adventures to offer additional opportunities to dig into these ideas throughout the year.

TEDxSantaBarbaraSalons create an intimate audience for an evening of highly-curated TED Talks revolving around a locally relevant theme. Meaningful group discussions follow, led by Sylvester and a guest moderator with expertise in that evening’s topic.

TEDxSantaBarbaraAdventures offer behind-the-scenes access to dynamic local people and places through exclusive tours. In addition to already calendared events, future Adventures may include a SpaceX launch, an inside look at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, a glass blowing workshop, and a trip to Santa Cruz Island’s UCSB Field Station.

The topics of the Adventures and Salons are threads that carry through the annual TEDxSantaBarbara conference. The 2019 event – themed “The Stories We Tell”– will explore a diverse array of topics including food literacy, the future of education, plastic pollution, environmental security and applied virtual reality.

“The idea for Salons and Adventures really grew out of our desire to harness the energy and enthusiasm generated by our annual TEDx conference and turn our community into a laboratory where ideas can continue to evolve and spread all year,“ stated Sylvester, TEDxSantaBarbara Executive Producer. “We see this as another powerful way of engaging the community and raising awareness of TEDx in Santa Barbara.”
