The Influence of J.S. Bach…

…on the history of western music is hard to overstate. Aside from being one of the greatest keyboard artists of all time, he was at the front edge of developments in tempering the notes of the scale, which is what allows instruments to play together in different keys and for harmonies to work together across the keys. He brought a new harmonic depth to music, while at the same time elevating the art of counterpoint to its zenith. Every subsequent classical composer has studied him. But not only classical composers: the list of pop artists who name Bach as a major influence is long.

The Bluegrass fiddle techniques we hear on opening night at the Festival (7/25) have grown out of techniques Bach expanded in his Brandenburg Concertos, which we will hear on night two of the Festival. We will explore Bach’s connection to the present day in our Bach, Baroque and Brunch on Sunday the 28th. You will get to hear the aria from Bach’s glorious Goldberg Variations not only during that brunch, but also as the framework to Conrad Tao and Caleb Teicher’s Piano /Dance Counterpoint II. On the second weekend, Jason Vieaux and Julien Labro will perform Bach during their concert, as will Anderson and Roe when they close out the Festival on Sunday, August 4.
