SANTA BARBARA – Hospice of Santa Barbara (HSB) has adjusted to the new realities that come with COVID-19 by creating their illuminate Speaker Series – a series that started last year which not only addresses aspects of the COVID-19 pandemic but also offers help on how to navigate through this new reality.

One way the organization has transitioned to serve this past year is by providing helpful resources to our community and beyond as they relate to COVID-19 through this virtual series that features a new world-renowned speaker every month. Past speakers include Roshi Joan Halifax, Frank Ostaseski, Katy Butler, Sharon Salzberg, Dr. BJ Miller, Dr. Sunita Puri, Jene?e Johnson and Daniel Goleman.

Next up on the illuminate Speaker Series line-up is Nora McInerny who will present Moving Forward on Wednesday, July 21st at 6:00 PM PDT. The event is free, but registration is required.

It’s been over a year since COVID-19 grounded our worlds to a halt: over a year of immense change and isolation and loss of all kinds. And while many of us are ready to open back up and get back to “normal life,” just as many of us feel as though that’s not an option for us.

In a culture that prizes picking yourself up by the bootstraps and looking at the bright side, grief and suffering are considered an interruption to life. Really, they’re a part of life, and in this continuation of her viral TED talk, “We don’t move on from grief, we move forward with it” Nora McInerny will provide inspiration, validation and actions we can all take to move forward together.

Nora McInerny is the best-selling author of the memoirs It’s Okay To Laugh, (Crying Is Cool Too) and No Happy Endings, as well as The Hot Young Widows Club. She hosts the award-winning podcast Terrible, Thanks for Asking, spoke on TED’s mainstage and founded the non-profit Still Kickin. She has contributed to publications like Time, Slate and Vox, where she’s often tapped for her essays highlighting the emotional landscape and humor in complex topics, like the financial impacts of healthcare and grief in a digital age. Nora is a master storyteller known for her dedication to bringing heart and levity to the difficult and uncomfortable conversations most of us try to avoid, and also for being very tall. She was voted Most Humorous by the Annunciation Catholic School Class of 1997.

“Navigating back to a similar life before COVID-19 has been difficult for a lot of us after being in a pandemic for over a year. Nora’s presentation, Moving Forward will help give insight on how we can all take steps to move forward together in a healthy manner,” said David Selberg, CEO of Hospice of Santa Barbara.

As we all know, people are reeling from this world-wide crisis emotionally, socially, and economically. People have shared a variety of intense feelings they are experiencing during this time, among them: fear, deep sadness, anxiety, grief, uncertainty over the present and what the future holds, vulnerability, despair, anger, hopelessness. HSB will have a new nationally-known speaker every month.

The series continues through 2021 with Pico Iyer Wednesday, August 18th. Hospice of Santa Barbara would like to give a special thanks to Natalie Orfalea Foundation and Lou Buglioli, Ridley-Tree Cancer Center, and Santa Barbara Foundation for sponsoring this event.
