The National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. is well known as one of the preeminent museums in the world. Perhaps lesser known is its internationally acclaimed art library that attracts users from all walks of life ranging from college students to highly recognized scholars of art.

With over half a million books, 16 million images of world art and architecture, extensive rare holdings, and an innovative program to make more digital resources on art accessible on the internet, Library staff help people learn more about the history of artworks not only in museums they visit but also help people learn about the works they may own.

Gregory P. J. Most discusses the history of the National Gallery of Art and show the varied resources of its research collections.
