VENTURA COUNTY — Under a federal law not widely known to consumers, the State of California must seek repayment from the estates of certain Medi-Cal members after they die. What does this mean for homeowners receiving Medi-Cal benefits? Ventura County Community Development Corporation (VCCDC) will host a free educational workshop open to anyone interested in learning more about the Medi-Cal Estate Recovery Program and its effects on homeownership. This workshop is part of VCCDC’s “From House to Home” Homeowner Workshops which are designed to educate homeowners on varying topics such as Financial Planning, Property Taxes, Home Selling and more. The workshop will take place on Tuesday, January 23rd at 6pm at the VCCDC Home Ownership Center located at 2231 Sturgis Road, Suite A, Oxnard, CA 93030.
Michael Williams, Attorney and Director at Grey Law, a nonprofit that provides legal services to the elderly will be the guest speaker. Topics to be discussed include:
- What the Medi-Cal Estate Recovery Program is
- Who is subject to Estate Recovery and who isn’t
- How does Estate Recovery work
- What protections are available and to whom
- New law passed in 2017 regarding Estate Recovery
- How Medicare beneficiaries are affected
There is no cost to attend the workshop. Space is limited. Seats can be reserved by calling (805) 273-7800 or visiting www.vccdc.org/events
