Fires destroy many things, but the worse loss is a sense of security, safety, and a place to call your own. Since Oct. 4, 94 people, of which 36 are children, live with this loss.
Most of the displaced families are indigenous farmworkers and their children who sleep on cots in the gymnasium of a local school, arriving from a short stay at the Oxnard College gym. Although some social services have been provided, there is a gap in resources for those who need immediate affordable housing.
“Youth in Solidarity,” composed of the Future Leaders of America, LULAC Youth Council #2094 and community members have collaborated to assist these homeless families.
On Nov. 15, a dinner and dance at the Knights of Columbus, Oxnard will take place. Dinner is is from 6 to 8 p.m. with music provided by Caliente 805 from 8 p.m. to midnight. David Cruz, of KTLK radio, will emcee a brief program. All profits from this fundraiser benefits the displaced families.
For information on sponsorship opportunities, please call Gabriela Rodriguez, Director, Future Leaders of America at 805-642-6208. FLA is a non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization.
Tickets are $25.
Your donations will go a long way to provide for the families during this holiday season.
