The Girl Scouts of California’s Central Coast will present their inaugural “Descubre Tu Comunidad / Discovery Your Community” event from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 3 at Oxnard Plaza Park at C and Fifth streets in downtown Oxnard. The event kicks off a series of activities for the Girl Scouts’ “¡Descubre!” project.
“The fastest-growing population in the U.S. is the Hispanic/Latino community and Girl Scouts currently serves less than 10 percent of that population,” the organization reported in a media release. “It is our goal to connect with the Hispanic community and deliver a high quality program to every girl who wants to be in Girl Scouts. While Girl Scouts and the Hispanic community may not have a long shared history, we do share fundamental beliefs. Hispanics identify family, education and self-respect, culture and morals as being important — a list that aligns with the principals of the Girl Scout Promise and Law.”
The June 3 event will provide businesses, professional associations and youth organizations that provide services to the community with free space at the park that will engage girls/families with information, an activity, game or craft. That will be followed up with a “Serie Descubre a las Girl Scouts / Discover Girl Scout Series,” a four-week summer series beginning June 6, featuring a “Build a Troop” meeting for parents in Spanish and English. The goal will be to identify potential leaders for new troops and increase membership numbers. The girls will meet once a week with the series highlighting Girl Scout traditions, games, songs and team-building activities for girls of all ages.
The “Descubre Tu Cultura / Discover Your Culture” program will take place during the September/October Hispanic Heritage Month celebration, featuring a partnership between the Girl Scouts and local businesses and professional organizations in a free community event.
