En FC honramos la cultura e historia hispana y latina. Reconocemos las contribuciones que los estadounidenses con raíces en países de habla hispana han hecho a la cultura y sociedad de los Estados Unidos. Realizamos diferentes actividades como gimnasia cerebral, taller de cine, yoga y relajación, y musicoterapia, entre otras. |

| We’re thrilled to share that the next few months will be filled with fun and engaging activities that reflect the seasons, holidays, and interests of our members. From creative crafts to festive celebrations, we invite family members and members of the community to join us in these special moments—there’s always something to enjoy, and community participation is at no cost!
In November, we’ll be hosting a Family Luncheon on November 27th, and in December, we’ll be bringing the holiday spirit to life with our Caregiver Christmas Party (date TBD). These events are a wonderful way to come together and celebrate with our members, and we’re always happy to welcome anyone who would like to lend their support to these meaningful gatherings.
If you’re interested in contributing to the fun by supporting these events, whether through volunteering or sponsoring a specific activity, please feel free to reach out. Together, we can create unforgettable memories for our community! |

Help Us Shape the Future of
Friendship Center Services in Carpinteria!
Please join us on Wednesday, October 9th at 5pm for a special listening session at the Carpinteria Arts Center to learn more about Friendship Center’s programs and services for adults living with memory loss and their families.
This session will also provide an opportunity to share input and ideas as Friendship Center expands services to better meet the needs of the Carpinteria community, thanks to a recent award from the Alzheimer’s Association Center for Dementia Respite Innovation.

“How Do I?…” Hot Topic:
Easy Lift Facts
- Though they are incredible partners, Easy Lift is not contracted with Friendship Center.
- The service area is Goleta to Carpinteria but it has to be ¾ of a mile from the nearest bus stop.
- The Easy Lift application process takes up to 21 days.
- Easy Lift gives 30 minute windows so that vehicles are able to pick up more than 1 person at a time. The drivers can only wait 5 minutes to pick up each passenger before they must leave.
- You are given your pick up/drop off window the day you schedule rides so please be aware of what time to be ready.
- If you miss your ride, Easy Lift cannot always send someone right away and the next available pick up could be 1-2 hours later so please be ready at the times you give their dispatcher for pickup/returns.
- Easy Lift is equivalent to the bus service and cannot always get you to a destination at an exact time.
- Rides need to be paid when getting in the vehicle.

We are able to provide short-term, reimbursement grants, courtesy of the Mary Oakley Foundation, for in-home care. Contact Amy West for information on the requirements & to apply.

“How Do I?…” Hot Topic:
Encouraging Cleanliness with Respect and Sensitivity
There is no one-size-fits-all approach to this tricky topic but below are a few tips from the Friendship Center team and our community of family caregivers that have helped them in caring for the health and hygiene of a loved one living with dementia:
- Change underpants, diapers, or pads as soon as you can after soiling.
- Ensure the bottom and genital area are washed daily to prevent infections
- Establish and maintain a simple daily routine, such as “Eat breakfast, brush teeth, comb hair,” to reinforce habits.
- Sanitary wipes can be easier and more comfortable for cleaning the skin after changing adult diapers or pads.
- Consider buying multiples of the same clothing items to allow them to wear a clean version of their favorite outfit while the other is being washed.
- Encourage clothing changes by linking them to specific occasions, such as a visit or group event, and compliment how they look in the new outfit.
- Model tasks like brushing teeth or applying deodorant alongside your loved one to make the process more comfortable and less intimidating.
- Enlist the help of a podiatrist for nail care or switch to an electric razor for safer grooming.
- Be prepared to let go if a hygiene task isn’t possible at a particular time; try again later without stress.
- Incorporate humor to lighten the mood and reduce resistance during hygiene tasks, making the experience more pleasant for everyone.

No-cost Care Consultations with a dementia care expert now available
|
|
Thanks to generous funding from the Arthur N. Rupe Foundation, Friendship Center is proud to announce an expanded suite of caregiver support services at no-cost to the community.
One of our services includes one-on-one consultations for dementia caregivers to assist with care planning, resource navigation & referrals, and disease education. Consultations are offered in English and Spanish.
