Friendship Center Adult Day Care Center in Santa Barbara — The Friendly Finch: March 2026

March 2026

A Letter from the Director

Ahh… the sweet smell of almost-spring air, and fresh paint, is here!

Over the past several weeks, our spaces have had quite the makeover. New floors, refreshed walls, updated furnishings, and reimagined workspaces. It has been a major overhaul, made possible by the final funds from the Department on Aging’s Bridge to Recovery grant- resources originally designated to help organizations like ours strengthen infection control and safety in the wake of COVID (ie. removing carpet and fabric surfaces, improving airflow and spacing… yes, please!).

And while the results are looking beautiful, I want to double down on why this “makeover” is about so much more than aesthetics; the environment at Friendship Center is an integral part of the care we provide.

Yes, we offer joyful activities – dancing, music, purposeful movement, art, laughter, conversation, and so much more. But the experience of care also lives in the subtle details: the chair someone sits in, the light in the room, the ease of moving through a space, the feeling that you are somewhere dignified, welcoming, and safe.

When someone walks through our doors, whether as a member, caregiver, staff member, or friend, we want them to feel something immediately: comfort, respect, and belonging.

I want our space to feel like a hug just as much as the ones we give to one another.

I want our space to invite conversation, spark an idea, an emotion, a memory. It can restore a sense of normalcy. It can even restore confidence in someone who may be losing pieces of it.

So while it might look like a standard renovation, what we were really doing was strengthening the foundation of our mission: creating an environment where our members, families, and staff can thrive.

And I have to say… it feels great. We are so excited to see the pieces all come together.

This season has brought so many changes to life at Friendship Center, and it reminds me how much this place continues to grow because of the people who care about it.

We’ll be sharing photos soon but, honestly, the best way to experience it is to come see it for yourself.

Our doors are always open.

PHOTOS OF FEBRUARY FUN

Meet the Team: Chyrelle B., Program Specialist
Though she just celebrated her 1-month anniversary with the Friendship Center, Chyrelle is already making her mark — and often whipping up something delicious while she’s at it.

Born and raised right here in Santa Barbara, Chyrelle is a proud alum of Dos Pueblos High School (Go Chargers!) and Peabody Charter School. The community she serves is truly home — and that local heart shines through in everything she does. It’s no mistake that life has led her to the Friendship Center.

A “Culinary Queen” and former SBCC Culinary student, Chyrelle knows her way around a kitchen — just don’t ask her to bake! Her true specialty? Backyard BBQ. Think mouthwatering ribs, perfectly grilled salmon, and steak done just right. She believes food is powerful — especially when it comes to healing the body.

Chyrelle is already passing down her love of cooking and life skills to her child — teaching confidence, independence, and creativity in the kitchen. She’s been known to whip up tasty treats for the members, bringing people together the best way she knows how: through food.

Chyrelle’s heart for caregiving extends far beyond her role at FC. She has worked as a special education paraeducator — a role she found deeply rewarding — and spent time in hospice care, where she developed profound compassion and understanding for end-of-life journeys. Caregiving isn’t just her profession. It’s who she is.

Chyrelle describes herself as a social butterfly — and it shows. Whether she’s dancing, laughing, or connecting with others, her energy is contagious. You might even spot this “East Beach butterfly” soaking up the sunshine by the ocean. Though we think, if given the chance, she’d ride off into the sunset on a horse. Growing up riding her horse, “Bodi” at El Capitan Ranch is one of her fondest memories about growing up in Santa Barbara.

Her favorite part about working at FC?

“The personalities. The backstories. It feels like a little piece of home.”

She shares that there are smiles and sometimes tears — but somehow, they always end up smiling.

In just one month, Chyrelle has already shown that she brings more than skills to FC — she brings heart, warmth, flavor, and connection.

We’re so lucky to have her on our team!

SUPPORTER SPOTLIGHT: CRAIG MARKSON

From Ledger Lines to Lasting Impact

Craig Markson

~ Member: Friendship Legacy Society & Legacy Leadership Committee ~

By: Heidi Holly, Legacy Liaison

For more than 25 years Craig Markson served as a steady and trusted presence behind the scenes at Friendship Center. As the organization’s longtime bookkeeper he brought dedication, precision, and a deep sense of responsibility to his work- ensuring that every dollar was carefully managed in support of our older adults and the families that we serve. While his role was often quiet and unassuming, his impact was anything but.

Through decades of service, Craig witnessed firsthand how Friendship Center provides connection, joy, and dignity to older adults who rely on its programs daily. He understood that the heart of the Center is not just in its services, but in the sense of belonging it creates for many.

Now in retirement, Craig continues his commitment to Friendship Center in a meaningful way and lasting way. By including the Center in his retirement plan, he has chosen to invest in the future of the Center and the well-being of generations to come.

“I’ve always believed in the mission,” he shared. “I was able to experience a lot about the

services provided to those that attended. Providing a program like Friendship Center is not inexpensive. In addition to the usual rent, utilities, insurance and maintenance, there are meals, program supplies and administrative expenses. The Center uses a sliding scale and doesn’t want to turn anybody away. I have included the Center in my legacy giving because Friendship Center has been part of my life for so long, and I wanted to make sure it can continue serving others well into the future.”

We are deeply grateful for Craig Markson and for all those who choose to support our mission through planned giving. His thoughtful legacy gift is a reflection of a lifetime of care, stewardship, and compassion. It is also an inspiring reminder that every individual has the power to leave a lasting impact.
