Four “Rising Stars” Recognized at Ferguson Case Orr Paterson

VENTURA COUNTY — Four attorneys with Ferguson Case Orr Paterson LLP, Ventura County’s largest law firm, have been named to the 2018 “Rising Stars” list of Super Lawyers. This is a repeat honor for partner Douglas Goldwater and associates Kymberley Peck and Jessica Wan, and the first recognition for partner Joshua Hopstone. The “Rising Stars” list includes fewer than 2.5 percent of the lawyers in the Southern California region who are 40 years old or younger, or who have been in practice for 10 years or less.

A family law expert, Goldwater provides skilled guidance on complex child custody cases and financial disputes, and has extensive litigation experience involving business, real property and intellectual property matters. He focuses on both litigation and collaborative cases for clients in Ventura, Los Angeles and Santa Barbara counties. A long-time board member of the Ventura County Bar Association, Goldwater was recently appointed to serve on the VCBA’s executive committee, which will culminate in his serving as president in 2019. Goldwater has been consistently named to the “Rising Stars” list since 2013. He earned his law degree from the University of Southern California, and his bachelor’s degree in mass communications and legal studies from the University of California, Berkeley.

Peck practices in the areas of family law, estate planning, probate and trust litigation. With experience in highly contested litigation, she guides clients through the legal process and brings strategic insight to cases involving crossover issues. She has been recognized as a “Rising Star” for three consecutive years and was named to Pacific Coast Business Times’ 40 under 40 list in 2017. She is a member of the Ventura County Bar Association, the Los Angeles Bar Association and the Beverly Hills Bar Association. An active member of the Santa Paula Rotary Club, Peck is currently serving as a board member of the Camarillo Library Foundation and as president for Women Lawyers of Ventura County. Peck holds a law degree from Southwestern Law School.

Recently elevated to partner, Hopstone has built a strong practice focused primarily on complex business and real estate related matters. He is also an accomplished appellate advocate. Hopstone currently serves on the board of directors of the Ventura County Bar Association and is president of the Ventura County Barristers. He is also a member of the Ventura County Trial Lawyers Association and the Chamber of Commerce, and regularly volunteers his time pro bono at Ventura County Legal Aid. He earned his law degree from the University of Michigan Law School in 2010 and is also a graduate of the University of California, San Diego.

Wan’s practice focuses primarily on complex civil and commercial litigation, appeals and employment matters. She is admitted to practice in the States of California and Hawaii as well as the Federal District Court for the District of Hawaii, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. Prior to joining FCOP, she practiced for three years at one of the largest private law firms in Honolulu. Wan earned her Juris Doctor summa cum laude from the William S. Richardson School of Law and graduated cum laude from the University of Southern California with a Bachelor of Science in aerospace engineering. During law school, Wan worked as a volunteer for the Hawaii State Judiciary’s Chief Family Judge and externed with the Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the District of Hawaii.

“We are proud to congratulate Doug, Kymberley, Josh and Jessica on being named to the 2018 “Rising Stars” list,” said FCOP managing partner Michael Velthoen. “Each continually works hard to hone their skills and expertise in their areas of practice and have made valuable contributions to our clients and our firm.”

Super Lawyers, a Thomson Reuters business, is a rating service of outstanding lawyers from more than 70 practice areas who have attained a high degree of peer recognition and professional achievement. The “Rising Stars” list is for attorneys who are still building their practices. The annual selections are made using a rigorous multi-phase process that includes a statewide survey of lawyers, an independent research evaluation of candidates and peer reviews by practice area.
