First District Supervisor Das Williams — Farmworker Conditions Community Meeting on Nov. 12

Farmworker Conditions Community Meeting

Farmworker Conditions Community Meeting

Tuesday, November 12 at 3:00 PM

Santa Maria Hearing Room, 511 Lakeside Parkway

Please join myself and Supervisor Hartmann at a community meeting to examine the conditions of farmworkers in our County, and to discuss strategies to improve conditions. The meeting will include panel discussions featuring farmworkers, researchers, ag operators, and more. Following the community meeting, the temporary ad hoc committee will report back to the Board of Supervisors with a summary of key points and possible suggestions for improving the lives of farm workers.

Live translation services will be available for attendees. The meeting can be watched live on CSBTV Cable Channel 20 and our CSBTV YouTube Channel. Following the event, our Committee will present a summary of key points to the Board of Supervisors.

Now Is The Time To Organize
Like many of you I am mourning, and hope is a distant thing. But if we care about the things that we profess to care about, we will not have the luxury to despair. There is too much to do.

For policymakers, In California, there is legislation to be written, and in other states, ballot measures to be launched. There is legal action to prepare for.

For all of us, now is the time to buy or lease an electric car before the $7,500 cash rebate from the Federal Government is in danger. Now is the time to build more alternative energy and energy storage facilities while Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act is around. Now is the time to get a heat pump water heater or a home battery while the funding is still here.

Now is the time to release the anger he has breathed upon our souls. Now is the time to organize.

Air Quality Watch In Place Due To Wildfires
There are two fires burning in our region, the Santa Lucia Fire in Lompoc and the Mountain Fire in Ventura County. The Evacuation Warning previously issued for the Santa Lucia Fire has been cancelled. If you are returning to the area, take caution as crews are still actively responding to the fire. Stay aware of changing conditions as this is a still a dynamic incident. More information and map at ReadySBC.org.

If you are traveling or have loved ones out in Somis/Camarillo, please monitor the Mountain Fire. You can get the latest information from Ventura County Emergency.

Recently, winds in Ventura County have been strong enough to spread this fire and/or start new ones, so please take that into mind before pulling off in your vehicle onto a vegetated side of a road. 80% of fires are started by vehicles with internal combustion engines (one more reason to go electric!) or taking hikes.

The Air Quality Watch in Santa Barbara County remains in place due to continued wildfire smoke. Current ground level air quality conditions throughout Santa Barbara County are good to moderate, with Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups in locations in close proximity to the Santa Lucia fire. Stay alert to local conditions by visiting the Santa Barbara Air Pollution Control District website.
