AGOURA HILLS — The first two “Be Like Carter” scholarships were awarded to Agoura High School students in December. The scholarships are awarded in memory of Carter Stone, an incoming freshman at Agoura High who passed away unexpectedly just before the start of the school year and after making the football team.

Winners are Giacomo Likavec a 10th grader who is co-captain of the Agoura High JV football team and a wrestler and Veorah Feddanich, a 9th grader who holds the number one position on the girls’ varsity tennis team.

Scholarship winners are selected based on the character traits they display on and off the field–traits that Carter Stone’s family say were a big part of Carter’s personality: work hard, be true, be humble, be kind.

The scholarships are funded by California Strong/Southeast Ventura County YMCA and Proactive Sports. California Strong was founded by professional athletes with the YMCA after the 2018 Woolsey Fire to provide support after a natural disaster. Proactive Sports in Westlake Village was founded by NFL coach Ryan Capretta. The training facility focuses on performance, longevity and injury prevention.

“The first recipients of the Be Like Carter Scholarship represent Agoura High School in a positive way,” says Garrett Lepisto, assistant principal at Agoura High School. “Agoura High School would like to thank California Strong/Southeast Ventura County YMCA and Proactive Sports for partnering to honor Carter Stone’s life through this scholarship program.”

Six Agoura High School athletes per year (one boy/one girl each season) will receive a $500 scholarship, a four-month training program at Proactive Sports, a nutrition plan and an in-person mentoring session with California Strong co-founder and professional baseball player Ryan Braun.

“We are humbled to be working with two amazing local organizations to assist with the scholarship for Carter Stone’s legacy,” says Emily Capretta, managing director of Proactive Sports.
