VENTURA — The Ventura County Arts Council, through their Arts Collective Studio at the Pacific View Mall, is sponsoring a free Chinese New Year community celebration in the Center Court area of the mall located in mid-town Ventura. All events are free and open to the public. Since this is the Year of the Dog, our furry companions are the feature of the celebration. Before and after our events, Paw Works, located in the Pacific View Mall, will be on hand with some of their current boarders looking for forever homes.
Building an Origami Dog House – A Demonstration
An educational event teaching origami techniques and the use of the abacus
Friday, February 23 – 1:00pm – Center Court
Artist BiJian Fan will erect a dog house using “bricks” constructed using origami
techniques and recycled paper. He will also create a paper dog for the for the
house from paper. Students are especially invited to attend to learn origami
techniques and the use of the abacus to learn math concepts
Saturday, February 24 – 1:00pm – Center Court
Artist Christine Leong will conduct a painting demonstration at Center Court, creating
dog portraits which will then be raffled off to the audience at the conclusion of her
art demonstration.
Traditional Lion Dance in full Costume
Sunday, February 25 – 1:00pm – Center Court
The Camarillo Kung Fu & Lion Dance Studio will perform the traditional Lion Dance
in all of its in full traditional costumes using the fundamental movements of Chinese
martial arts, accompanied by the music of beating drums and cymbals. Thelion, a
symbol of power, wisdom, and good fortune, chases away evil spirits and brings
happiness, longevity, and good luck. This will be the concluding highlight of the
Chinese New Year celebration.
