Feb. 10 — Musicians from five local high schools will join forces for a performance in Santa Maria

SANTA MARIA — Top musicians from five local high schools will join forces for a performance on Sunday, Feb. 10 at the Pioneer Valley Performing Arts Center, Pioneer Valley High School, 675 Panterh Drive, Santa Maria.

The SMJUHSD Honor Band (Righetti, Pioneer Valley and Santa Maria High Schools) will include musicians from Orcutt Academy and Cabrillo High Schools for the 2 p.m. show.

Seating is expected to be limited for the free performance, so people should arrive early. Donations to the SMJUHSD Performing Arts Programs are always encouraged.

The guest conductor will be Professor Jen Martin, Director of Bands at Cuesta College. The 51 students were given their music to practice in January.

The concert will include works by John Phillip Sousa, Frank Ticheli, Leonard Bernstein, John Mackey, Travis Cross, and Dmitri Shostakovich.

“The Band Directors from all participating high school bands would like to invite you to attend this event and support these fine musicians while you enjoy an hour of incredible musicianship,’’ said PVHS Director of Bands Cindy Wehlander. “We hope to see you on Sunday afternoon.’’

The students participating include 16 from RHS, 21 from PVHS, 5 from SMHS, 8 from OA and 1 from CHS.

The idea for the SMJUHSD Honor Band came from Superintendent’s Council last year. Students, principals and Superintendent Dr. Mark Richardson meet monthly to talk about how and why the district operates and to allow students to have a voice.
