2-1-1 and El Centrito Family Learning Centers celebrate successes
One organization provides a link to a variety of community services at the touch of a finger. The other organization provides a variety of educational programs for youth and their parents.
On Friday, Feb. 10, both organizations will celebrate their successes at two separate events in Ventura County.
The seventh annual 2-1-1 Celebration will be held on Friday, Feb. 10 at the County Office of Education, 5100 Adolfo Road, Camarillo. The community is invited to join United Way of Ventura County, Interface Children Family Services, and First 5 Ventura County for the Seventh Anniversary Celebration of 2-1-1 in Ventura County, according to a media release by the United Way.
The Ventura County 2-1-1 program was the first in California to offer the service. 2-1-1 is an easy-to-remember, three-digit telephone number that enables the public to access vital social services in their communities, the organization reported.
Operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 2-1-1 links callers to various health and human services such as food, shelter, financial assistance and mental health services.
Check-in for the 2-1-1 celebration begins at 7:45 a.m., with breakfast at 8 a.m. and the program beginning at 8:15 a.m.
The cost is $25 and includes the buffet breakfast.

El Centrito annual celebration
El Centrito Family Learning Centers will present its third annual dinner dance, “Baile de Amor y Amistad,” beginning at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10 at Sugar Beets Restaurant and Grill, 455 So. A St., Oxnard.
“This Valentine’s event is especially timely as we celebrate our 20th anniversary of delivering quality educational support services in the Oxnard community,” Luann Rocha, executive director, stated in a media release.
El Centrito began its services on Feb. 14, 1992 as a nonprofit community agency and started its history of responding to the needs of low-income Latino families of the greater Oxnard community, Rocha said.
“When we opened our doors 20 years ago, we were very committed to establishing a long-term presence in the Latino community and continuing quality services regardless of funding challenges,” co-founder Jesus Rocha stated in the release.
El Centrito has honored its commitment over these past 20 years by delivering quality educational support services that promote parent engagement and children’s success in school, he said.
Support of this fundraising event will benefit the educational programs of El Centrito and ensure that the agency remains a positive influence in Ventura County over the next decades. Major sponsors include Wells Fargo Bank, Raypak and Vida Newspaper.
Music for the dinner dance, from 7 to 9 p.m., will be provided by D.J. Carlos.
Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. They can be purchased at El Centrito, 450 So. K St., Oxnard or by calling 805.483.8685. Visit www.elcentrito.org for more information.
