The Ventura County Mexican American Bar Association, which is receiving the President’s Award, includes a group of attorneys who are committed to increasing the number of Latinos who enter the legal profession by providing information and scholarships to students.

The association has been active in immigrant rights, farmworkers’ rights, civil rights issues, education of minority and underrepresented individuals, access to justice for the low-income or minority members of our community, diversity on the bench and other social, economic and political issues.

“In December 2012, Gilbert Romero, a long-time MABA member, was appointed by Gov. Brown to sit as a judge on the Ventura County bench,” the association reported in its acceptance letter. “He is one of only two Latino judges in our county. MABA’s push to ensure that there is more diversity on the bench has given fruit and we will continue to fight to ensure that more women, minorities and people of diverse backgrounds, gender, ethnicity and sexual orientation become leaders in our community.”
