Padres Promotores de la Educación was established in 2010 with the goal of increasing the number of Latino students graduating from high school and going to college. Members of the parent peer training team include Soledad Barragan, Hortencia Languren, Fabiola Martinez and Teresa Torres.
“We realized parents’ lack of information and knowledge of higher education prevented them from supporting their children, so the project was established to train Latino parents to support their children in the home and community,” the organization wrote in its acceptance letter.
“The Promotores team has been involved in home visitations and community presentations that cover important topics that help parents support their children, such as school transitions, how to read a report card, high school graduation requirements, and how to apply for and fund a college education. With this work, we have reached about 700 parents in the last four years.… We have worked hard and have confronted many barriers in reaching our community’s parents. Sharing information on higher education and respecting parents’ time and interests has been challenging, but we continue and know that our community deserves the information.”
