SANTA BARBARA — From March 23 to April 3, 2017, coinciding with Santa Barbara City College’s Spring Break, the Study Abroad Office of Santa Barbara City College will be conducting a trip to the northern Spanish region of Galicia to participate in El Camino de Santiago and practice conversational Spanish at all levels. All of SBCC’s Study Abroad programs are open to community members.
Program participants will walk for five days and cover a total distance of 68.35 miles from Sarria, Spain to Santiago de Compostela. In addition to walking the famous “Way of St. James”, this program will include visits to the Galician villages of Portomarin, Palas de Rei, Aruza, and Arca. Participants will explore the Santiago de Compostela cathedral and have independent travel opportunities at the end of the program. Receiving the “Compostela” Pilgrimage certificate will be just one of the many personal triumphs of the trip.
Taking the classroom to the streets of Spain, Conversational Spanish classes will be in process during the walks and excursions. Enjoy the beautiful Galician hospitality, nature, landscape, art, and gastronomy under the direction and instruction from program director Dr. Francisco Rodriguez Nogales, who has ample experience in directing successful programs abroad, most recently to Habana, Cuba, during winter of 2016.
The application deadline for this program is December 1, 2016. You do not have to be enrolled at SBCC at the time of application. All of SBCC’s Study Abroad programs are open to community members. Two informational meetings are scheduled for November 1st and 17th, from 3 pm – 4pm at the Luria Library in the Faculty Study (L-137) on the West Campus. Please check requirements and get additional information about the program on the Study Abroad website or contact Study Abroad Senior Program Assistant Nicole Walther at (805) 730-4294 or nwalther@pipeline.sbcc.edu.
