SANTA MARIA — The Righetti High School Drama Department will present “She Kills Monsters”, a play that uncovers the secret life of a creative teenager through her adventures in Dungeons & Dragons, inside the Black Box Theatre on Friday (Dec. 6) and Saturday (Dec. 7).
The dramatic comedy is about Agnes, a woman trying to know her now-deceased teenage sister, Tilly. It is only through Tilly’s fantasy life that her true identity is revealed. The play, written Qui Nguyen, offers teen drama as related to identity, bullying and the slaying of monsters present in their safe world of escape and fantasy.
“Teenagers and adults, especially children of the 90’s who will get the humor, will want to see this play,’’ said art teacher and drama director Elesa Carlson. “Tilly’s inner battles with bullies and identity get played out before your eyes, in fast-paced sword play and wild imagination. I’m so impressed by the commitment of my advanced theatre arts class, who have beautifully designed, produced, directed and perform in this exciting adventure full of laughs, battles and heart. They have done so with limited class time rehearsals, while juggling other after school commitments, like “West Side Story” rehearsals for our upcoming district play. Our student-director, Elise Belanger, is the true star of the show, because her endless passion continually pulled everyone in and kept them going.”
The school’s advanced theatre class has 26 students participating.
The shows are recommended for 12+ because of the mature content. Tickets are $6 for students and $10 for adults. The room/theatre (403) where the production is happening is near senior parking lot (west side of campus). There is plenty of free parking.
