CAMARILLO — CSU Channel Islands (CSUCI)’s dedication to student and faculty research has earned the University a distinguished “Research Colleges and Universities” or “RCU” designation from the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.

CSUCI joins 11 of the 23 campuses in the California State University system that have received the new Carnegie designation and is among 216 RCU universities across the country.

The RCU designation is a new classification intended to recognize institutions of higher education that have conducted a significant amount of valuable research but have previously been overlooked.  Awardees spend at least $2.5 million on research on average in a single year, and this designation aims to acknowledge the growing research efforts in institutions that may not fit the criteria for a traditional “Research 1” (R1) status.

CSUCI President Richard Yao offered thanks and congratulations to the Research & Sponsored Programs (RSP) team, and the grant-writers and scholars across campus who have led the effort to earn CSUCI the RCU designation.

“Our new status as an RCU is due to the work of our many scholars across campus and our RSP colleagues whose diligence in applying for, winning, and managing grants brings great benefits for our students, campus, and the communities we serve,” Yao said. “We congratulate and thank all who have contributed to CSUCI earning Carnegie’s new RCU designation. This is a truly outstanding accomplishment.”

The Carnegie Classifications are the nation’s primary system for categorizing and describing colleges and universities in the United States.

“Congratulations to all of the CSU institutions recognized by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education,” CSU Chancellor Mildred García said. “These classifications underscore the CSU’s commitment to engaging our undergraduate students in applied research that lifts communities and addresses our state’s most pressing challenges across fields of study – and they wonderfully reflect the CSU’s mission and core values.”
