VENTURA — The Ventura County Board of Supervisors has unanimously approved a series of legislative sponsorships aimed at improving utility accountability, enhancing public safety, and expanding disaster recovery assistance for residents.
Patrick Maynard, Director of the Office of Emergency Services, emphasized the significance of these legislative efforts, stating, “This is a major step forward for Ventura County. By supporting these legislative initiatives, we’re not only addressing the immediate needs of disaster victims but also laying the groundwork for stronger accountability and preparedness during future emergencies. Residents deserve timely recovery resources and greater transparency from utility providers.”
Senator Henry Stern, a strong advocate for disaster relief, also expressed his support for the initiatives: “Our communities deserve transparency, accountability and timely support during times of crisis. The goals of this legislation ensure that disaster survivors receive the aid they need, and that we build a more resilient California. I am proud to partner with Ventura County to champion these critical reforms in Sacramento.”
Supervisor Jeff Gorell highlighted the importance of the legislative proposals, saying, “Our legislative delegation has committed to collaborating with the County to achieve these goals, and if necessary, they are prepared to introduce legislation by the February 21 deadline. These proposals prioritize public safety, enhance accountability, and promote equity for all residents. They embody Ventura County’s unwavering dedication to protecting our communities, strengthening emergency response efforts, and ensuring that no one is left behind during disaster recovery.”
Investor-Owned Utility Accountability:
Support for legislation requiring Investor-Owned Utilities (IOUs) to reimburse customers for prolonged power outages during Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS). This ensures financial relief for residents while holding utility companies accountable.
Transparency During PSPS Events:
Advocacy for laws mandating greater transparency and timely communication from IOUs, including real-time updates to customers and notifications to public safety agencies about critical infrastructure.
California State Individual Assistance Program (CSIA):
Endorsement of legislation establishing the CSIA, which would provide financial assistance to disaster victims affected by incidents that do not qualify for federal disaster relief or fail to meet FEMA’s individual assistance thresholds.
Support for Mountain Fire Victims:
Backing of a legislative initiative to waive California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) requirements for victims of the Mountain Fire, streamlining the rebuilding process for those impacted.
These initiatives align with Ventura County’s strategic goals of enhancing public safety, strengthening community resilience, and ensuring equitable access to disaster recovery resources.
