CAMARILLO — The California art collection of beloved Camarillo nurse Cherie Nedderman will be on display for the first time beginning with a reception on Oct. 27 from 1 to 5 p.m. in the John Spoor Broome Library Art Gallery at CSU Channel Islands (CSUCI).
“The Cherie Nedderman Collection of California Art at CSUCI: Impressions and Dialogues” consists of 20 paintings from a 58-piece collection of “en plein air” or “outdoor” paintings of Southern California done between 1890 and the late 1960s. The paintings, which covered the walls of Nedderman’s hillside Camarillo home, featured frame after frame of sycamore trees, tumbling waves and rolling green hills.
Professor of Art History Irina D. Costache curated the exhibit together with Professor of Art Liz King.
“She would sit outside and gaze at the hills, that was the view from her backyard,” King said. “Inside her home, her art was in every room, every corner.”
When Nedderman died unexpectedly in January of 2019 at the age of 71, her brother Ted Nedderman and his wife, Nancy, of Gig Harbor, Washington, donated Nedderman’s precious collection to the University.
“We wanted it to be near her,” Nancy said. “And she was a nurse and there’s a wonderful Nursing program here.”
The exhibition also includes an incredible online project which pairs works from the collection with paintings created by CSUCI students under King’s direction.
“What is so wonderful is that these works of art will remain on our campus,” Costache said. “Students, faculty and staff can come look at them and it’s an opportunity for all of us to learn from them. And there is an incredible visual connection with the landscape and some of the architectural structures. There are many wonderful dialogues between the paintings and this campus. We all value the collection, and this is its home.”
During the opening, informal tours of the exhibit will be conducted by Art History student Oscar Rios.
Limited parking is available on campus with the purchase of a $6 daily permit; follow signs to the parking permit dispensers. Free parking is available at the Camarillo Metrolink Station/Lewis Road with bus service to and from the campus. ?Riders should board the CSUCI Vista Bus to the campus; for exact arrival and departure times, check the schedule at?www.goventura.org
