Confirmation would add only Latino serving on the California Supreme Court in a state with the largest ethnic group being Latino
CAMARILLO – The California State Council of the League of United Latin American Citizens – LULAC, applauds the Governor of California, Jerry Brown for nominating Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar to serve on the California Supreme Court, the organization reported in a media release.
“California LULAC applauds Governor Brown for nominating Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar to serve on the California Supreme Court. A distinguished legal scholar, Immigration policy expert, Presidential Appointee, and having served for two Presidential Administrations, demonstrates his extensive experience and dedication towards the fulfillment of the American Dream,” stated Dave Rodriguez, California LULAC State Director. “If appointed Cuéllar will be the only Latino to serve on the California Supreme Court in a state with 40% Latinos, and the first since former Justice Carlos Moreno resigned in 2011. Therefore, it is critical that the state’s highest court reflect the diversity of the largest ethnic group in the state.”
Governor Brown’s nomination will be submitted to the State Bar’s Commission on Judicial Nominees Evaluation and confirmed by the Commission on Judicial Appointments. If confirmed by the Commission, the nominee will appear on the November 4th ballot for voter approval. With voter approval Cuéllar will fill the vacancy created by the retirement of the Honorable Marvin R. Baxter on January 4, 2015.
“California LULAC looks forward to the addition of Cuéllar on the California Supreme Court, and will work diligently in supporting the addition of more Latinos on the state’s highest court, in the years to come,” stated Rodriguez.
California LULAC has served the Latino community in California since 1947. The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), established in 1929, is the nation’s largest and oldest civil rights volunteer-based organization that empowers Hispanic Americans and builds strong Latino communities. National LULAC is headquartered in Washington, DC, with 1,000 local councils around the United States and Puerto Rico.
