THOUSAND OAKS — On Thursday, February 16, 2023, the Center for Economics of Social Issues at California Lutheran University will hold “What Does It Take to Call a Place a Home?,” a conference that explores the social and economic lives of undocumented immigrants and their regional and economic impacts on the Central Coast of California. The conference lasts from 8:30 am to 2 pm in the Lundring Events Center.
The program for the conference includes a short video of a visit by a group of students and faculty to migrant shelters in Tijuana. Cal Lutheran professors together with their students will share some of the findings of interviews carried out by the students under their supervision.
A panel of experts will share their views, professional experiences, and research findings on various pertinent social, economic and legal issues related to undocumented immigrants and their challenges before and after settling. A comprehensive study of the socio-economic profile of undocumented immigrants and their economic impact within the region and California will be presented and released.
The keynote speaker is Susana Cruickshank, who directs the civil society organization Centre for International Cooperation and Public Management Studies (CECIG), where she works on projects that accompany the day laborer population in the states of Morelos and San Luis Potosí and, as part of the “National Network of Day Labourers and Agricultural Day Labourers,” in Oaxaca, Sinaloa, Guanajuato, Chiapas, Guerrero, and other states. Her work at CECIG includes extensive research to produce comprehensive diagnoses and proposals on agricultural day laborers’ living, working and wage conditions.
Two interpreters will translate the entire event into Spanish and English. Headphones will be provided for those who need them.
Admission is $40; Cal Lutheran students, faculty, and staff may attend free.
