VENTURA — The Ventura Police Department helped make the season brighter for local families on December 10, 2025, during its annual Shop with a Cop event, held at Walmart and hosted in partnership with the Housing Authority of the City of San Buenaventura and the Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation.

This year, 30 children from low-income households and families facing childhood cancer were paired with Ventura Police officers for an unforgettable evening of one-on-one shopping. Each child received $150 to choose gifts for the people they love, turning what can be a challenging time of year into an afternoon of joy and connection.

“Shop with a Cop is one of the most meaningful events we host,” said Police Chief David Dickey. “For our officers, it’s a chance to show families that their community is here for them, especially during a season that can be overwhelming and stressful. Seeing kids light up, and watching officers share in that joy, reminds us why building trust through this type of public service matters so much.”

Thanks to generous support from the Ventura Police Community Foundation, Walmart, Ventura Police Officers’ Association, Starbucks, and Tony’s Pizzaria, participants also enjoyed a warm pizza dinner, hot cocoa, festive desserts, and event t-shirts to take home.

Every child left with gifts wrapped and ready to be shared with loved ones at home.

“The holidays can be an especially heavy time for families facing financial stress,” said Jeff Lambert, Chief Executive Officer for the Housing Authority of the City of San Buenaventura. “Events like this bring more than gifts, they offer comfort, connection, and a moment where families feel truly seen and supported by their community.”
