OXNARD — The Mixteco/Indigena Community Organizing Project (MICOP) is thrilled to announce that our indigenous language radio station, Radio Indigena, can now be reached on your FM dial. After three years of careful preparation, training, and initial internet broadcasting, Radio Indigena can now be heard on 94.1 FM in Port Hueneme, Oxnard, El Rio, Saticoy, Santa Paula, Fillmore, Piru, Moorpark, Camarillo, Thousand Oaks and Ventura.
MICOP invites all of Ventura County to celebrate the FM launch with us at our Radio Launch Party on March 1st, 2017, at 520 W. Fifth St., Suite K, at 6:00pm. We invite you to visit our small studio, hear personal testimonies from Radio DJs and enjoy appetizers.
Launching Radio Indigena has been a labor of love for our hundreds of volunteers and supporters. Radio Indigena began in 2013 as a suggestion from Hugo Morales, the director of California’s Spanish language public radio station, Radio Bilingue. We met with members from the indigenous community to ask for their advice on whether or not we should undertake this project, and the answer was a loud and unanimous YES! We were then lucky enough to be one of the few applicants to receive approval from the Federal Communication Commission (FCC), granting us our Low Power FM broadcast station contracting permit. We had no radio experience, but lots of enthusiasm.
Over 200 indigenous immigrants, primarily strawberry farmworkers, spearheaded the work of building a radio station. More than 40 leaders have completed MICOP’s 20-hour DJ training program. Our Indigenous Radio Advisory Board has raised over $40,000 through popular, family-friendly dance parties, typically welcoming 500 guests with live music.
Hundreds of Ventura County residents have contributed to Radio Indigena or visited the station as on-air guests. We were proud to receive our first financial contribution from the late Daniel Villanueva of Camarillo, a founder of Univision and the first Latino player in the NFL. Also, we are thankful to the first foundations that supported us, the Presbyterian Committee on the Self-Development of People, Rebozo Festival Committee and Cal Endowment.
We currently feature over 50 hours of our own original programming on the station. This includes 20 MICOP-trained DJ’s who lead their own programs on a variety of topics, including indigenous poetry, popular Mixtec music, community organizing, education, health and women’s empowerment. We teach multiple classes through Radio Bilingue related to MICOP’s mission of supporting, organizing and empowering the indigenous immigrant community. Nearly all programs are offered in Spanish, Mixteco or Zapoteco. We also stream approximately four hours of Radio Bilingue programming weekly.
Launching Radio Indigena has been a story of hope and perseverance. We overcame multiple obstacles related to funding, engineering, and technology over the past three years to reach this day. The radio station has already proven to be an incredible communication tool and opportunity for our community leaders to build our collective voice. We cannot wait to see what the future holds, as farmworkers, in the field, people driving their cars, and radio listeners throughout the county tune in to 94.1 FM.

La estación de Radio en Lenguas Indígenas en el Condado de Ventura se lanzara vía FM
OXNARD — La Organización Comunitaria de Proyecto Mixteco/Indígena (MICOP, por sus siglas en Ingles) se en orgullece en anunciar que nuestra estación de Radio Indígena, finalmente logrará su lanzamiento oficial via FM. Después de tres años de preparación, entrenamiento y haber estado vía internet, Radio Indígena se podrá escuchar en el 94.1 FM teniendo un alcance en las áreas de Port Hueneme, Oxnard, El Rio, Saticoy, Santa Paula, Fillmore, Piru, Moorpark, Camarillo, Thousand Oaks and Ventura.
MICOP les invita a todos ustedes a celebrar con nosotros nuestro lanzamiento oficial. Nuestra celebración se realizara el día 1ro de Marzo del 2017 en el 520 W. Fifth Street., Suite K, a partir de las 6pm. Durante nuestro evento, usted podrá visitar nuestro pequeño pero bonito estudio de Radio, escuchara testimonio de los locutores y disfrutara de deliciosos bocadillos.
El lanzamiento de Radio Indígena es un logro gracias al trabajo arduo por cientos de voluntarios y aliados. Radio Indígena inicio en el 2013 por el apoyo del Sr. Hugo Morales quien es el director ejecutivo de Radio Bilingüe en California y lideres de la comunidad indígena en Oxnard han apoyado este proyecto de una manera incondicional. Afortunadamente, la Comisión Federal de Comunicación (FCC, por sus siglas en Ingles) otorgo el permiso de construir nuestra antena como radio comunitaria (LPFM, por sus siglas en Ingles) y hemos trabajo muy duro para poder lograrlo. Considerando, que no habíamos tenido nada de experiencia en proyectos de radios, pero nuestra perseverancia ha hecho de este proyecto una realidad.
Mas de 200 inmigrantes indígenas, principalmente trabajadores del campo, son los responsables de hacer posible este proyecto. Mas de 40 lideres han terminado las 20-horas de entrenamientos del programa de locutores de radio. El Consejo de Radio ha recaudado aproximadamente $40,000 por medio de eventos de bailes comunitarios en donde a mas de 500 invitados, incluyendo la participación de grupos y bandas de músical de la comunidad.
Cientos de residentes en el Condado de Ventura han contribuido a Radio Indígena y han visitado nuestros estudios y han sido participes en los programas al aire. Estamos muy orgullosos de haber recibido el primer apoyo financiero para Radio Indígena, del ahora deceso Sr. Daniel Villanueva. El Sr. Villanueva fue originario de Camarillo y fue fundador de Univisión y el primer jugador latino en el NFL. También, agradecemos a dos otras fundaciones por su aporte financiero a este proyecto, el Comité Presbiteriana del Auto-Desarrollo de la Comunidad, el Comité de Madrinas del Rebozo y el California Endownment.
Actualmente, tenemos una programación radial de 50 horas en nuestra estación. Esto incluye aproximadamente a 20 locutores entrenados quienes dirigen su propia programación en una variedad de temas, que incluye poesía, música mixteca, abogacía, educación, salud, y entre otros. También, tenemos programación de Radio Bilingüe relacionado a nuestra misión de apoyar, organizar y empoderar a la comunidad indígena en el Condado de Ventura. Nuestra programación se realizan en los idiomas Zapoteco, Mixteco y español.
El lanzamiento de Radio indígena ha sido una lucha de esperanza y perseverancia. Para finalmente poder llegar a este día, hemos sobresalido de un sin fin de obstáculos relacionados a fondos, ingeniería, y tecnología. La estación de radio ya ha comprobado ser una herramienta sustancial de comunicación y oportunidad para nuestra comunidad y lideres para edificar sus voces colectivas. Estamos felices de lo que el futuro nos prepara, como trabajadores agrícolas en los campos, manejando nuestros carros y poder sintonizar nuestra radio vía 94.1 FM.
