Lorri Santamaría of Ventura has a compelling story to tell related to her own story of survival despite difficult challenges.
As she was halfway around the world in New Zealand when her fight against cancer began, Lorri Santamaría would soon launch a journey that would bring her back to her California roots and back to Kaiser Permanente for care that she credits for her survival. She shares her story as a beacon of hope.
Santamaría is the associate vice president of strategy at California Lutheran University, where her role encompasses driving diversity, equity, inclusion, justice and belonging initiatives to deliver optimal offerings to students through partnerships with local businesses, nonprofits, municipalities and healthcare organizations.
She is a seasoned academic leader with more than 20 years of experience in leadership, teaching, and research, beginning her career as a professor of education and spanning subsequent positions as professor, head of school, dean and associate dean at universities in California and New Zealand.
It was during her tenure in New Zealand that Santamaría faced one of the most challenging periods of her life. She was diagnosed with bladder cancer that had spread to her kidney. This devastating news was confirmed through exploratory surgery followed by a round of chemotherapy.
Despite successful initial treatment, a later scan revealed that the cancer had spread to a tumor in her neck, leading her providers in New Zealand to raise a discussion about palliative care. Thinking of her husband and young children, she could not accept this was her only option.
Faced with this dire prognosis, she made a bold decision that she was going to take control of her destiny and pursue any options available to fight her cancer. She thought back to the exceptional care she experienced as a Kaiser Permanente member in California prior to moving to New Zealand, and she decided that she and her family would move back to the United States where she would continue her treatment.
Seeking care near family residing in Port Hueneme, she found Dr. Rashmi Menon, a local oncologist serving the Kaiser Permanente West Ventura area. Even before leaving New Zealand, she reached out to Dr. Menon, sharing her story, medical information, and asking for her help. Dr. Menon agreed to take her case, a decision that would mark a turning point in Santamaria’s cancer battle.
Upon her return to the U.S., Santamaría quickly transitioned into care at Kaiser Permanente, with Dr. Karen Lockwood stepping in as her primary physician and starting a course of immunotherapy arranged under the guidance of Dr. Menon within just two weeks of her arrival.
This innovative treatment had just been approved and was crucial in her recovery. Her cancer care journey at Kaiser Permanente had just begun under the expert management of her medical team and ultimately would include surgery to remove the tumor in her neck, radiation, and four years of immunotherapy.
Throughout this extended period of treatment, she formed lasting bonds with her physicians and the entire medical staff involved in her care. In particular, she emphasized the importance of the kind and caring environment at Kaiser Permanente, including the welcoming attitude towards complementary and alternative medicine practices like yoga, meditation and Indigenous healing modalities supporting her recovery in mind, body and spirit.
Santamaría eventually reached a significant milestone, being declared free from the need for further immunotherapy and marking the end of her intensive treatment journey.
In commenting on her care experience throughout her years of treatment, she says, “Despite the serious nature of my prognosis, everyone was so positive and supportive, always working together for the greater good of my health and well-being.”
Santamaría’s story is one of resilience, strength, faith and determination. Despite the immense challenges she faced, she remained steadfast in her fight against cancer. Her unwavering spirit and the support, medical excellence, and encouragement of Dr. Menon and her entire Kaiser Permanente medical team resulted in her complete recovery against all odds.
Today, she continues to inspire those around her with her incredible journey. She exemplifies the power of positive thinking, faith and the importance of perseverance in the face of adversity.
Her story, she says, serves as a ray of light for others battling cancer and demonstrates the power of sharing successful outcomes that offer hope and lift each other up.
