VENTURA — The General Services Agency will accept the donation of two bronze veteran memorial statues for installation at the Ventura County Veterans Memorial. Following a vote at the April 25th Board meeting, the Board of Supervisors authorized the General Services Agency to work in partnership with the Vietnam Veterans of Ventura County and other veterans’ organizations to install the statues.
The two statues slated to be installed will honor the loss and sacrifice made by families and members of the military. The “Gold Star” statue will be a life size rendition of a mother/wife kneeling holding her son’s/husband’s folded casket flag. The “Remembering” statue will be a life size rendition of a kneeling soldier reaching out and remembering his fallen brethren.
“It is powerful to be in the presence of monuments in Washington DC like the Vietnams’ Memorial Wall,” said Chair of the Board of Supervisors Matt LaVere. “Now we do not have to travel across the country, we’re going to have something equally powerful right here in Ventura to go pay our respects which is so important.”.
In a special partnership with high school students from Architecture Construction and Engineering (ACE) Charter High School, measurements and design of the statues have been created. ACE students Haley Driscoll and Corbin Alonso presented their work and CAD drawings to the Board of Supervisors.
“Memorials are built by those whose freedoms were protected by our veterans, and it is important for our students to feel that connection,” stated John Middleton, ACE Charter Principal.
Both statues are the emotionally stirring works of Sutton Betti, the son of the late David Betti, former VVVC president and former Commander of Ventura VFW Post 1679.
“I am pleased our Board has voted to partner with the Vietnam Veterans of Ventura County to give our Veterans Memorial the addition of two new statues honoring our Gold Star Wives and Mothers and another to honor “service Members who still mourn the loss of their comrades,” added Supervisors Kelly Long. “This will be a nice facelift to the Memorial that was originally put in place in 1985 and will provide a place of healing for Ventura County residents who have lost a loved one in a military conflict.”
The exact date of the installation is not yet determined. The creation and installation of the statues are dependent upon the fundraising efforts of the veterans’ groups.
In further support of our veterans, the Board of Supervisors voted to approve proclaiming June 6, 2023 as D-Day Remembrance Day in Ventura County.

La Agencia de Servicios Generales aceptará la donación de estatuas conmemorativas en el Monumento a los Veteranos del Condado
VENTURA, Calif. – La Agencia de Servicios Generales aceptará la donación de dos estatuas de bronce en memoria de los veteranos para su instalación en el Monumento a los Veteranos del Condado de Ventura. Luego de una votación en la reunión de la Junta del 25 de abril, la Junta de Supervisores autorizó a la Agencia de Servicios Generales a trabajar en asociación con los Veteranos de Vietnam del Condado de Ventura y otras organizaciones de veteranos para instalar las estatuas.
Las dos estatuas que se instalarán honrarán la pérdida y el sacrificio realizado por familias y miembros de las fuerzas armadas. La estatua de la “Estrella Dorada” será una representación de tamaño natural de una madre/esposa arrodillada sosteniendo la bandera del ataúd doblado de su hijo/esposo. La estatua “Recordando” será una representación de tamaño natural de un soldado arrodillado que se acerca y recuerda a sus hermanos caídos.
“Es poderoso estar en presencia de monumentos en Washington D.C. como el Muro Conmemorativo de Vietnam”, dijo el Presidente de la Junta de Supervisores, Matt LaVere. “Ahora no tenemos que viajar por todo el país, vamos a tener algo igualmente poderoso aquí en Ventura para presentar nuestros respetos, lo cual es muy importante”.
En una asociación especial con estudiantes de secundaria de la Carta de Arquitectura, Construcción e Ingeniería (ACE), se crearon las medidas y el diseño de las estatuas. Los estudiantes de ACE Haley Driscoll y Corbin Alonso presentaron su trabajo y dibujos CAD a la Junta de Supervisores.
“Los monumentos son construidos por aquellos cuyas libertades fueron protegidas por nuestros veteranos, y es importante que nuestros estudiantes sientan esa conexión”, declaró John Middleton, director de ACE Charter.
Ambas estatuas son obras emocionalmente conmovedoras de Sutton Betti, hijo del difunto David Betti, expresidente de la VVVC y excomandante de Ventura VFW Post 1679.
“Me complace que nuestra Junta haya votado para asociarse con los Veteranos de Vietnam del condado de Ventura para darle a nuestro Veterans’ Memorial la adición de dos nuevas estatuas en honor a nuestras esposas y madres Gold Star y otra para honrar a los “miembros del servicio que aún lloran la pérdida de sus camaradas”, agregó la Supervisora Kelly Long. “Este será una buena adición al Memorial que se instaló originalmente en el 1985 y brindará un lugar de sanación para los residentes del condado de Ventura que han perdido a un ser querido en un conflicto militar”.
La fecha exacta de la instalación aún no está determinada. La creación e instalación de las estatuas depende de los esfuerzos de recaudación de fondos de los grupos de veteranos.
En apoyo adicional a nuestros veteranos, la Junta de Supervisores votó para aprobar la proclamación del 6 de junio de 2023 en el Condado de Ventura como el Día de conmemoración de la invasión en la Normandia (D-Day en inglés) durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial.
