VENTURA — Tax season is upon us and low- to moderate-income Ventura County residents are encouraged to take advantage of ways to put more money back in their pocket with the help of United Way of Ventura County’s (UWVC) Volunteer Income TaxAssistance (VITA) Program.
On March 18, 2023, IRS certified volunteers will be at Moorpark College to prepare and e-file state and federal tax returns for households with incomes under $60,000. Tax preparers assist tax filers to access the tax credits to which they are eligible. You may qualify for state and federal Earned Income Tax Credit.
The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is a tax credit for low-to-moderate income working families and individuals. The EITC can help you reduce your tax liability and, in many cases put money in your pocket. You must file your taxes to receive the EITC, even if you did not earn enough money to be required to file.
If you have low income and work, you may qualify for CalEITC. This credit gives you a refund or reduces your taxes owed. If you meet CalEITC requirements and have a child younger than 6 years old all of the 2022 tax year, you may also qualify for the Young Child Tax Credit. Filing your state tax return is required to claim both credits. Self-employed workers, families, and those with ITINs earning up to $30,000 are eligible for the CalEITC.
Since 2007, United Way of Ventura County and the County of Ventura Human Services Agency have partnered to provide free tax preparation services to Ventura County. In addition to the Moorpark College event, seven in-person VITA sites are available across Ventura County. To schedule an appointment for the Moorpark College event or at any VITA site, visit myfreetaxes.org or call 2-1-1.
To file a return online with a VITA volunteer, visit getyourrefund.org/vcunitedway. You will need access to a smart phone or computer for uploading and downloading documents and the ability to print.
