The United Way of Santa Barbara County is coordinating free tax preparation and filing services through June for the community through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program and Financial Empowerment Partnership, the organization reported in a media release.
The VITA program is offered free to families, individuals and seniors who earn less than $50,000. Tax returns are prepared and filed by trained, certified volunteers.
This year, five local organizations are providing the free VITA tax preparation services for qualified individuals and families for the 2011 tax season. Trained, experienced volunteers provide free bilingual income tax return preparation and E-Filing as well as help people take advantage of tax benefits they are eligible for, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), Child and Dependent Care Credit, Making Work Pay Credit and higher education tax credits, among others.
