Last summer, we started doffing our masks and reuniting with family and friends. There was a festive glee in the air we breathed as if we who were now vaccinated against COVID were celebrating “The End of the Pandemic.” There was a feeling that now, finally, we could get on with our lives and regard the previous year as something akin to a very bad dream.
The party did not last long. Just as we were putting away the champagne glasses and summer party hats, the Delta variant emerged “from out of nowhere,” quashing our hopes of a return to near normal. We grumbled as we took our masks out from the drawers where we had stored them as “souvenirs” from a crisis that we had survived. Or, if we had ceremoniously burned or shredded our masks, we kvetched as we had to go out and buy new ones.
We watched with a mix of anger, sadness, and helplessness as the numbers of cases, hospitalizations, and deaths began that dreaded, familiar and awful uphill roller coaster ride. We were starting to become sickeningly familiar with that pattern. Masks were once again ubiquitous, the mandates returned, and strict measures were once again required at public indoor gatherings (some venues never cared about any safety protocols whatsoever—and still don’t).
More recently, we started feeling the exhilaration of slowly decreasing rates of the disease only to have our hopes slammed down once again by the worrisome “Omicron” variant. Once again, the foreboding numbers are starting to rise while we wonder if our vaccines are going to hold up against it.
We are starting to ask ourselves if what we are seeing is the beginning of an endless cycle: an emergent virus expansion, a vaccine (or vaccine adjustment) to counter it, a diminution in the infection rate, a new mutation of the virus, and back to the beginning of the cycle.
Too many people around the world are still not vaccinated, either because of legitimate medical concerns, supply and distribution issues, or because they believe the lies and conspiracies and refuse these well-documented and proven miracles of science. Many in the latter group refuse to wear the face masks that would protect not only themselves but also, more importantly, their communities. Because we have not been able to achieve a much greater degree of vaccine-induced immunity throughout the world, we may have to resign ourselves to a pathogenic virus that with some measure of luck will eventually become merely endemic in our society. Just like the endemic flu, the coronavirus will always be ready to pounce mostly on the unprotected—and quite possibly with a vengeance.

El verano pasado, comenzamos a quitarnos las máscaras y a reunirnos con familiares y amistades. Hubo un júbilo festivo en el aire que respiramos como si los que ahora estábamos vacunados contra el COVID estuviéramos celebrando “El fin de la pandemia”. Teníamos la sensación de que ahora, finalmente, podíamos seguir con nuestras vidas y considerar el año anterior como algo parecido a un muy mal sueño.
La fiesta no duró mucho. Justo cuando estábamos guardando las copas de champán y los sombreros de fiesta de verano, la variante Delta surgió “de la nada”, anulando nuestras esperanzas de volver a la normalidad. Refunfuñamos mientras sacamos nuestras máscaras de los cajones donde las habíamos guardado como “recuerdos” de una crisis a la que habíamos sobrevivido. O, si nos hubiéramos quemado o triturado ceremoniosamente nuestras máscaras, nos quejábamos porque teníamos que salir y comprar unas nuevas.
Nos quedamos con una mezcla de enojo, tristeza e impotencia mientras el número de casos, hospitalizaciones y muertes comenzaba esa temida, familiar y espantosa montaña rusa cuesta arriba. Estábamos empezando a familiarizarnos repugnantemente con ese patrón. Las máscaras volvieron a ser ubicuas, los mandatos regresaron y una vez más se requirieron medidas estrictas en las reuniones públicas en interiores (algunos lugares nunca se preocuparon por ningún protocolo de seguridad en absoluto, y aún no lo hacen).
Más recientemente, comenzamos a sentir la euforia de la disminución lenta de las tasas de la enfermedad solo para que nuestras esperanzas se derrumbaran una vez más por la preocupante variante “Ómicron”. Una vez más, las cifras preocupantes comienzan a aumentar mientras nos preguntamos si nuestras vacunas resistirán.
Empezamos a preguntarnos si lo que estamos viendo es el comienzo de un ciclo sin fin: una expansión viral emergente, una vacuna (o ajuste de vacuna) para contrarrestarlo, una disminución en la tasa de infección, una nueva mutación del virus, y volver al inicio del ciclo.
Demasiadas personas en todo el mundo todavía no están vacunadas, ya sea por preocupaciones médicas legítimas, problemas de suministro y distribución, o porque creen en las mentiras y conspiraciones y rechazan estos milagros de la ciencia bien documentados y probados. Muchos en el último grupo se niegan a usar máscaras faciales que los protegerían no solo a ellos mismos, sino también, lo que es más importante, a sus comunidades. Debido a que no hayamos podido lograr un grado mucho mayor de inmunidad inducida por vacunas en todo el mundo, es posible que tengamos que resignarnos a un virus patógeno que, con un poco de suerte, eventualmente se volverá simplemente endémico en nuestra sociedad. Al igual que la gripe endémica, el coronavirus siempre estará listo para atacar en su mayoría a los desprotegidos—y muy posiblemente con una venganza.
