VENTURA — On Tuesday, June 27, though unanimous vote, the Board of Supervisors approved the County Parks Department to enter into a dual lease agreement with the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Oxnard and Nyeland Acres Promise for management of the John C. Zaragoza Nyeland Acres Community Center and Park. The 2.2-acre park property, which is currently owned by the County of Ventura but under management by the Boys and Girls Club, is not available to the public on a full-time basis. Through the voted-on agreement, the County will now assume all oversight and maintenance for the park area through the County Parks Department, which will allow the neighborhood park to be open from dawn to dusk for the Nyeland Acres community. As well, the buildings will now be jointly operated by the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Oxnard and Port Hueneme and Nyeland Promise.
“This is a very large deal to our community,” stated District 3 Supervisor Kelly Long. “Rolling this park into part of the County’s parks system allows us to take the liability off of the Boys and Girls Club and open it up even more to the community as a whole. It allows us to really develop the park for the community.”
In addition to voting on the lease agreement, the Board of Supervisors approved a vote for no levy of special taxes against the properties for residents of the Nyeland Community for fiscal year 2023-2024. The Special Tax was originally voted on by residents in 2016 through Measure O to cover costs associated with the maintenance of the Nyeland Acres Community Center. Funds to off-set the collection of special taxes will be contributed through the County’s General Fund.
“Access to parks and open space is a critical resource for community wellbeing,” stated Colter Chism, Deputy Director for the County Parks Department. “This action by the Board of Supervisors is a huge step for the underserved community of Nyeland Acres. We are excited to help improve the park and make it more accessible to the community.”
Through the agreement and partnership, full community access to the park will be available for the first time in 30 years. Plans to break ground on construction of a new community center are slated to occur in 2024.
“We have been honored to oversee this green space and community center for the past few years,” said Andrew Peake, Executive Director for the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Oxnard and Port Hueneme. “It has been our pleasure to welcome Nyeland Promise into this area. We are incredibly excited about this new phase of our partnership.”
An official ribbon cutting ceremony for the park is scheduled for Friday, July 14 at 4:00 p.m. at Nyeland Acres Park, 3334 Santa Clara Avenue, Oxnard.

VENTURA – – El martes 27 de junio, mediante voto unánime, la Junta de Supervisores aprobó que el Departamento de Parques del Condado celebre un contrato de arrendamiento dual con el Boys and Girls Club of Greater Oxnard y Nyeland Acres Promise para la administración del John Zaragoza Centro Comunitario y Parque Nyeland Acres. La propiedad del parque de 2.2 acres, que actualmente es propiedad del Condado de Ventura pero está bajo la administración del Boys and Girls Club, no está disponible al público a tiempo completo. A través del acuerdo votado, el Condado ahora asumirá toda la supervisión y el mantenimiento del área del parque a través del Departamento de Parques del Condado, lo que permitirá que el parque del vecindario esté abierto desde el amanecer hasta el anochecer para la comunidad de Nyeland Acres. El Impuesto Especial fue votado originalmente por los residentes en 2016 a través de la Medida O para cubrir los costos asociados con el mantenimiento del Centro Comunitario Nyeland Acres. Los fondos para compensar la recaudación de impuestos especiales se contribuirán a través del Fondo General del Condado.

A través del acuerdo y la asociación, el acceso completo de la comunidad al parque estará disponible por primera vez en 30 años. Los planes para comenzar la construcción de un nuevo centro comunitario están programados para el 2024.
