VENTURA — The City of Ventura has released a new episode of Ventura Voices titled “All Things Sustainability: Ventura’s Community Programs in Action.” Hosted by Communications Specialist Alejandra Belalcázar, the episode explores how Ventura’s Environmental Sustainability Division has evolved from its early recycling initiatives in the 1990s into a multifaceted team leading communitywide efforts in waste reduction, clean energy, and long-term climate planning.
Belalcázar is joined by Environmental Specialists Arriana Rabago and Logan Babcock, who explain how local programs such as the Food Waste Recycling Program, the Free Compost and Mulch Program, and the City’s expanding Green Schools partnerships play a central role in meeting state and local sustainability goals.
“This episode is a great opportunity to share how every resident can play a role in building a healthier, more sustainable Ventura,” said Rabago. “From reducing food waste to participating in city programs, small actions collectively make a big impact on our environment.”
Babcock added, “We’re excited to connect with the community and highlight the ways Ventura is leading in sustainability. Whether through our school partnerships or renewable energy projects, there are countless ways for residents to get involved and support our goals.”
The episode also features details about the upcoming Mulch Giving Event on December 13 at 336 Sanjon Road from 9:00-11:00 a.m. where residents can pick up free mulch for their gardens. Registration is required to participate.
Listeners will also learn about milestones achieved under the City’s Climate Action and Resilience Plan (CARP) and new ways local schools and community members can engage in sustainability initiatives.
Rabago has a Master of Business Administration in Sustainable Solutions and has over ten years of experience in the solid waste field, including eight years with the City of Ventura. She is passionate about environmental justice and community education. Babcock earned a Master of Environmental Science and Management from University of California Santa Barbara’s Bren School and has been with the City for two and a half years, focusing on sustainability education and decarbonization projects.
