VENTURA — Responding proactively to the aftermath of the estimated 2,000 gallons of gasoline that leaked from the Sinclair gas station located at 2121 E. Harbor Boulevard, the City of Ventura declared a local state of emergency on Friday, September 27, 2024.
This move allows the City to expedite disaster response and seek emergency funding from the state to aid recovery efforts. The City Council ratified the local state of emergency on October 1, 2024, and it will remain in effect for the next 60 days.
“As we continue to recover from the aftermath of this incident, we are going to need additional resources,” shared Ventura Mayor Joe Schroeder. “The declaration of a local state of emergency enables us to seek essential emergency funding, expedite recovery endeavors to swiftly address damage, hasten repairs, and ensure the prompt restoration of our City’s infrastructure.”
An emergency response was triggered on September 19, when elevated atmospheric gas, or vapor levels were first detected. Ventura Water crews discovered an unknown substance leaking into the sewer line along Monmouth Way. After preliminary testing, the Environmental Protection Agency was able to confirm the substance was gasoline.
On the morning of September 22, emergency personnel issued an evacuation order for Bayshore Avenue south of Peninsula, affecting approximately 150 residents. This was followed by an evacuation warning for the entire Pierpont neighborhood south of Seaward Avenue, impacting more than 4,000 residents. By 4:45 p.m. that same day, all orders were lifted as vapor levels were successfully reduced.
“Ventura City staff, alongside the County of Ventura and multiple local and state agencies, worked together to protect the health and safety of our residents and environment,” said City Manager Bill Ayub. “We are grateful for their coordinated efforts, which were essential in managing the emergency and addressing the restoration needs following the leak.”
