SANTA PAULA — The City of Santa Paula proudly announces the official designation of the Tower Theater, located at 982 E. Main Street, as a City Historic Landmark. The Santa Paula City Council adopted Ordinance No. 1341 following a unanimous vote on February 19, 2025, recognizing the Tower Theater’s rich history and architectural significance.
First opened as the Elektra Theatre in 1911, the Tower Theater has served as a cornerstone of Santa Paula’s cultural and entertainment history. The building, Ventura County’s oldest purpose-built movie theater, has undergone various transformations, including its time as the Mission Theatre, Columbia Theatre, and Lyric Theatre, before being rebranded as the Tower Theater in 1940. Over the years, it played a pivotal role in providing Spanish-language programming for Santa Paula’s Mexican-origin community, making it a symbol of inclusivity and cultural representation.
“The Historical Landmark designation adopted by the Santa Paula City Council through the unanimous support of our Design Assistance Committee and the Historic Preservation Commission speaks volume to our collective support for preserving a Main Street landmark with rich cultural history and significance to the community,” said Mayor Pedro A Chavez. “Our City extends its appreciation to David Berger for his vision, creativity, and investment in our Tower Theatre.”
The current owner, David Berger, has been an advocate for the restoration and revitalization of historic theaters. Having successfully restored the 110-year-old Ojai Playhouse, Berger has set his sights on bringing the Tower Theater back to life. “I am thrilled to take on this project and restore the Tower Theater to its former glory,” said Berger. “Santa Paula has such a rich history, and this theater deserves to be a vibrant part of the community once again.”
The designation as a historic landmark is a crucial step in preserving the integrity of the building while allowing for its future revitalization. The City of Santa Paula’s commitment to historic preservation aligns with its broader strategic goals of enhancing cultural tourism, supporting economic development, and fostering community pride.

La ciudad de Santa Paula designa el histórico Tower Theater como monumento histórico de la ciudad
SANTA PAULA – – La Ciudad de Santa Paula anuncia con orgullo la designación oficial del Teatro Tower, ubicado en el 982 E. Main Street, como Monumento Histórico de la Ciudad. El Concilio de la Ciudad de Santa Paula adoptó la Ordenanza No. 1341 después de una votación unánime el 19 de febrero de 2025, reconociendo la rica historia y significado arquitectónico del Teatro Tower.
Inaugurado como Elektra Theatre en 1911, el Tower Theater ha sido la piedra angular de la historia cultural y del entretenimiento de Santa Paula. El edificio, el cine más antiguo del condado de Ventura, ha sufrido varias transformaciones, incluyendo su época como Mission Theatre, Columbia Theatre y Lyric Theatre, antes de ser rebautizado como Tower Theater en 1940. A lo largo de los años, ha desempeñado un papel fundamental en la programación en español para la comunidad de origen mexicano de Santa Paula, convirtiéndose en un símbolo de inclusión y representación cultural.

El actual propietario, David Berger, ha sido un defensor de la restauración y revitalización de los teatros históricos. Tras restaurar con éxito el Ojai Playhouse, de 110 años de antigüedad, Berger se ha propuesto devolver la vida al Tower Theater. «Estoy encantado de emprender este proyecto y devolver al Tower Theater su antiguo esplendor», afirma Berger. «Santa Paula tiene una historia tan rica, y este teatro merece volver a ser una parte vibrante de la comunidad».
La designación como monumento histórico es un paso crucial para preservar la integridad del edificio y permitir su futura revitalización.
