CENTRAL COAST — (On Dec. 1), the Central Coast Alliance United for a Sustainable Economy (CAUSE) and the Mixteco/Indigena Community Organizing Project (MICOP) celebrated and honored the farmworker families of Santa María at an event called “La Cultura Cura” (The Culture Cures). More than 60 people attended the event, which aimed to help build a more united community, one that connects and strengthens through art. Music, dance, song, poetry, and painting were the centerpieces of a special night that will undoubtedly remain in the memory of the people present. After a year often marked with painful reminders about the challenges faced by farmworkers, from high-profile investigations of labor violations to the workplace deaths of farmworkers in Guadalupe and Cuyama (see statement here), the “Cultura Cura” event offered an opportunity to reflect in joy and value family bonding moments.
CAUSE and MICOP have strived to promote spaces that are inclusive, diverse, and that truly connect with the interests and needs of the local community. These two organizations, with a long history in their communities, have trained their staff to provide interpretation, education and organization services from a multicultural perspective. Neither age nor language were barriers to enjoying this event; Children, youth, and adults were able to appreciate the different artistic presentations that were made in Spanish and Mixteco. Through the shared space created by “La Cultura Cura” farmworkers harvest connections with one another in their native Spanish or indigenous language.
“Oftentimes, our community is united during times of disparity, bonding over the difficulties and troubles of life and work. It was important for us to create a space that uplifted the positives of farmwork and created community and unity through the beauty of culture and storytelling. Participants shared during the conversation that despite how hard it was to work in the field, it was a job that allowed them to appreciate their great connection with nature, with the land they harvest, and the food they grow for the benefit of every family. At MICOP’s and CAUSE’s joint initiative of “La Cultura Cura,” farmworkers experienced the warmth of acknowledgment and applause for their monumental labor as they worked tirelessly during the harvest season over the course of the year. It is a long overdue recognition that illuminated the path towards unity and recognition for the tireless farmworkers in California’s Central Coast during this event.

It was an honor to participate in this extraordinary event, contributing to the cultivation of appreciation and unity for those resilient individuals who form the backbone of our agricultural economy,” stated MICOP’s Santa Maria Community Organizing Manager Fernando Martinez.

COASTA CENTRAL – – (El 1 de diciembre), la Alianza de la Costa Central Unidos por una Economía Sostenible (CAUSE) y el Proyecto de Organización Comunitaria Mixteco/Indígena (MICOP) celebraron y honraron a las familias campesinas de Santa María en un evento llamado “La Cultura Cura”. Más de 60 personas asistieron al evento, que tuvo como objetivo ayudar a construir una comunidad más unida, que se conecta y fortalece a través del arte. Música, danza, canto, poesía y pintura fueron los ejes centrales de una noche especial que sin duda permanecerá en la memoria de los presentes. Después de un año a menudo marcado por dolorosos recordatorios sobre los desafíos que enfrentan los trabajadores agrícolas, desde las investigaciones de alto perfil sobre violaciones laborales hasta las muertes en el lugar de trabajo de trabajadores agrícolas en Guadalupe y Cuyama (ver declaración aquí), el evento “Cultura Cura” ofreció una oportunidad para reflexionar con alegría y valorar los momentos de unión familiar.
CAUSE y MICOP se han esforzado en promover espacios inclusivos, diversos y que conecten realmente con los intereses y necesidades de la comunidad local. Estas dos organizaciones, con una larga trayectoria en sus comunidades, han capacitado a su equipo para ofrecer servicios de interpretación, educación y organización comunitaria desde una perspectiva multicultural. Ni la edad ni el idioma fueron barreras para disfrutar de este evento; niños, jóvenes y adultos pudieron apreciar las diferentes presentaciones artísticas que se hicieron en español y mixteco. A través del espacio compartido creado por “La Cultura Cura” los trabajadores agrícolas cosechan conexiones entre sí en su lengua nativa español o indígena.
“A veces nuestra comunidad está unida en tiempos de disparidad, uniéndose para superar las dificultades y los problemas de la vida y del trabajo. Para nosotros era importante crear un espacio que resaltara los aspectos positivos del trabajo agrícola y creara comunidad y unidad a través de la belleza de la cultura y la narración de historias. Los participantes compartieron durante la conversación que, a pesar de lo duro que era trabajar en el campo, era un trabajo que les permitía apreciar su gran conexión con la naturaleza, con la tierra que cosechan y los alimentos que cultivan en beneficio de todas las familias. Si tienes comida en tu mesa es gracias a su duro trabajo, que también es un trabajo gratificante.” Monse García-Jiménez, organizadora de CAUSE.
En la iniciativa conjunta de MICOP y CAUSE de “La Cultura Cura”, los trabajadores agrícolas sintieron la calidez del reconocimiento y el aplauso por su monumental labor, ya que han trabajado incansablemente durante la temporada de cosecha a lo largo del año. Es un reconocimiento que se debió haber hecho hace mucho tiempo, pero que iluminó el camino hacia la unidad y el reconocimiento de los incansables trabajadores agrícolas de la Costa Central de California durante este evento.
“La Cultura Cura no sólo iluminó a los héroes silenciosos, sino que también alimentó una comunidad de solidaridad. Fue un honor participar en este extraordinario evento, contribuyendo a cultivar el aprecio y la unidad para esas personas resistentes que forman la columna vertebral de nuestra economía agrícola”, declaró Fernando Martínez, Gerente de Organización Comunitaria para MICOP en Santa María.
