VENTURA — The Human Services Agency announced that as of June 1, 2019, Supplemental Security Income/Supplemental Payment (SSI/SSP) recipients may be eligible to receive CalFresh food benefits. CalFresh food benefits stretch household budgets, allowing individuals and families to afford nutritious food, including more fruit, vegetables, and other healthy options. CalFresh food benefits are delivered on an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) debit card and can be used at any grocery store and farmers market that accepts EBT.
In Ventura County, just over 60,000 individuals currently receive CalFresh food assistance and it is estimated that another 15,000 individuals who receive SSI or SSP may become eligible. Human Services Agency staff is prepared to help older adults and people with disabilities who receive SSI to apply for CalFresh food assistance. There will be no change or reduction to their SSI/SSP benefits. Households that already receive CalFresh and currently have a member of their household that has been excluded because they receive SSI do not need to re-apply and will be contacted at their next report or recertification date.
Many seniors and people with disabilities living on fixed incomes are already at-risk of food insecurity. At 74 years old, Marla was one of the almost 1 in 5 older adults in California who face the threat of hunger in a year. When health complications prevented Marla from getting to the County office to renew her CalFresh benefits in time, the worker assigned to her case knew that without the food CalFresh benefits provide, Marla’s health would be more at risk. To prevent interruption of benefits, staff made special arrangements to meet with Marla outside the office to accommodate her medical needs. Relieved, Marla explained that Social Security alone is not enough to pay for everything she needs and by the end of each month, she depends on CalFresh to help her survive. With SSI/SSP recipients now eligible to apply for CalFresh, seniors and people with disabilities in our community will have a new option available to help make ends meet.

Additional state-funded nutrition benefits may be available to households currently participating in CalFresh who experience a reduction or discontinuance of CalFresh benefits due to the addition of the SSI/SSP recipient to the household.

VENTURA – – La Agencia de Servicios Humanos del Condado de Ventura anunció
que a partir del 1o de junio de 2019, las personas quienes reciben Seguridad de Ingreso Suplementario/Pago Suplementario del Estado (SSI/SSP, por sus siglas en inglés) pueden calificar para recibir beneficios alimentarios de CalFresh. Los beneficios de CalFresh hacen que rinde el presupuesto del hogar, permitiendo a los individuos y familias alcanzar alimentos nutritivos, los cuales incluyen más fruta, verduras y otras opciones saludables. Los beneficios de CalFresh se reparten a través de una tarjeta de Transferencia Electrónica de Beneficios (EBT, por sus siglas en inglés) que se puede usar en tiendas de alimentos o mercados que participan.
En el Condado de Ventura, actualmente poco más de 60,000 individuos reciben asistencia alimentaria de CalFresh y se estima que pueden calificarse otros 15,000 individuos quienes reciben SSI o SSP. El personal de la Agencia de Servicios Humanos del Condado de Ventura está preparado para asistir a los adultos mayores y personas con discapacidades quienes reciben SSI a solicitar asistencia alimentaria de CalFresh. No habrá cambio ni reducción en sus beneficios de SSI/SSP. Aquellos hogares que ya reciben CalFresh y actualmente cuentan con un miembro de la familia que ha sido excluido porque recibe SSI, no necesita volver a solicitar y serán contactados en su próxima fecha de reportar o recertificar.
Muchas personas mayores y con discapacidades quienes viven de ingresos fijos ya están en riesgo de inseguridad alimentaria. A los 74 años, Marla se incluyó entre los casi uno de cada cinco adultos en California quienes se enfrentan con el riesgo de hambre dentro de un año. Cuando complicaciones de salud impidieron que Marla llegara a la oficina del Condado para renovar sus beneficios de CalFresh a tiempo, el empleado asignado a su caso sabía que sin el alimento provisto por los beneficios de CalFresh, la salud de Marla estaría aún más en riesgo. Para prevenir una interrupción de beneficios, el personal hizo arreglos especiales para reunirse con Marla fuera de la oficina para adaptarse a sus necesidades médicas. Aliviada, Marla explicó que el Seguro Social no es suficiente para pagar todo lo que necesita y que al final de cada mes, ella depende de CalFresh para ayudarle a sobrevivir.
