SANTA MARIA — Allan Hancock College welcomed thousands of new and returning students back to its Santa Maria campus and Lompoc Valley Center on Jan. 21 for the start of spring classes.
Despite the chilly weather, campuses were bustling with activity as more than 10,200 credit and noncredit students started classes.
“It’s always exciting when we get to see students back on campus for the start of classes,” said Hancock Superintendent/President Kevin G. Walthers, Ph.D. “Our entire team of faculty and staff are dedicated to helping make their college experience as rewarding as possible.”
During the first and second day of classes, the college’s staff, administrators and student ambassadors worked at information booths, where they answered questions, provided snacks and helped students locate their classes.
“A lot of the students who come to us are new, so they usually want to know where they can find their classes. We will help them out and even walk them over if they need us to,” said Hancock Student Ambassador Kayleen Agustin, who spent the morning working one of the information booths on the Santa Maria campus.
Ambassadors like Agustin and the Hancock booth staffers also directed students to a wide variety of support services and resources. Those include free textbook and laptop lending and tutoring, as well as the college’s new food pantry and clothing closet operated via the college’s Basic Needs Center. Students can also access financial aid, health services, and academic counseling.
“My advice to other students is to not be afraid to ask questions and to ask for help if you need it,” said Agustin. “Everyone at Hancock is very friendly and they want to help you. They won’t turn their backs on you.”

ESTUDIANTES DE HANCOCK REGRESAN A CLASES DE PRIMAVERA
SANTA MARIA – – El 21 de enero, Allan Hancock College dio la bienvenida a alumnos nuevos y reincorporados para el inicio de clases de primavera en el campus de Santa María y el Lompoc Valley Center.
A pesar del frío, ambos campus estaban activos con más de 10,000 estudiantes comenzando sus cursos con créditos o sin créditos.
“Nos emociona ver a nuestros estudiantes de regreso para el inicio a clases,” dijo Kevin G. Walthers, superintendente/presidente de Hancock. “Nuestros profesores, personal y administradores están comprometidos en ayudar que nuestros estudiantes se aprovechen de todos los recursos disponibles en el colegio.”
El personal, administradores y embajadores estudiantiles del colegio trabajaron en varios puestos de información, en donde respondían preguntas, otorgaban bocadillos y ayudaron a los estudiantes a buscar sus clases.
“Recibimos a muchos estudiantes nuevos y muchos necesitan ayuda en buscar sus clases,” dijo Kayleen Agustín, embajadora estudiantil de Hancock, quien trabajo en uno de los puestos de información por la mañana. “Nosotros podemos ayudarlos y hasta podemos acompañarlos hasta sus salones de clase si lo necesitan.
Embajadoras como Kayleen también dieron información clave a estudiantes acerca de todos los recursos disponibles en Hancock, como el préstamo de libros y computadoras, tutoría e información sobre la nueva despensa de alimentos y ropa operada por el Basic Needs Center (Centro de Necesidades Básicas). Los estudiantes también pueden recibir servicios de ayuda financiera, servicios de salud y consejería académica.
“Mi consejo para otros estudiantes es que no tengan miedo de hacer preguntas y que pidan ayuda si la necesitan,” dijo Agustín. “Todos en Hancock son muy amables y quieren ayudarte. No te darán la espalda”
