“There but for the grace of God go I.” We might mutter such a phrase when we see a broken, homeless person on the street, a severely disabled child, a mentally disturbed individual, an accident victim, or a family destroyed by divorce, violence, or an “act of God.”

Whether or not we are “believers,” and whether we like it or not, “God” is often invoked in our language. When we speak of hidden or unpredictable forces, we might revert to ideas that once drove superstitions or ancient spiritual beliefs, even now in the Internet Age.

We may have heard the declaration that the language of nature, or of God, is mathematics. Indeed, much of what we observe and measure is subject to the laws of mathematics, and that includes our fortunes—or misfortunes—in life. As much as we might want to deny it, or deem it to be “heretical,” statistics explains many of the circumstances in our lives. But those cold, unsympathetic bell curves and statistical laws are leavened and potentially overridden by our optimism or our lack of will, our outlook or our apathy, our beliefs as well as our sheer drive and determination. To some degree, we are subject to the hand of nature that enforces harsh and immutable laws within which all of creation must navigate; on the other hand, we, as beings at the pinnacle of creation (though sometimes we have to wonder…), house powerful forces that we can harness within ourselves to banish the bell curves or formulas that might otherwise attempt to preordain us to a mediocre or tragic condition in life.

This is not to minimize the plight of millions who suffer on the planet. We are all on the “losing end” in one department or another in life. The key to understanding the paradox of statistical fate vs. the power of our minds is contained within the well-known prayer: accepting the things we cannot change with serenity, having the courage to change the things we can and the wisdom to know the difference.

De No Ser Por la Gracia de Dios…

“De no ser por la gracia de Dios, ahí anduviera yo.” Podríamos murmurar una frase como esta cuando vemos a una persona desamparada en la calle, o un niño gravemente discapacitado, o una víctima de un accidente, un individuo afectado por una enfermedad mental, o una familia destruida por el divorcio, la violencia, o un “acto de la naturaleza”.

Ya sea que seamos o no “creyentes”, y que nos guste o no, el nombre de Dios se invoca con frecuencia en nuestro lenguaje. Cuando hablamos de fuerzas ocultas o impredecibles, podemos volver a las ideas que alguna vez impulsaron supersticiones o creencias espirituales antiguas, incluso ahora en la era del Internet.

Es posible que hayamos escuchado la declaración de que el lenguaje de la naturaleza, o de Dios, consiste en las matemáticas. De hecho, gran parte de lo que observamos y medimos está sujeto a las leyes de las matemáticas, y eso incluye nuestras fortunas, o desgracias, en la vida. Por mucho que deseemos negarlo, o considerarlo “herético”, las estadísticas explican muchas de las circunstancias en nuestras vidas. Pero esas curvas frías y antipáticas de distribución normal y las leyes estadísticas son fermentadas y potencialmente anuladas por nuestro optimismo o nuestra falta de voluntad, nuestra perspectiva o nuestra apatía, nuestras creencias, así como nuestro ímpetu total y determinación. Hasta cierto punto, estamos sujetos a la mano de la naturaleza que impone leyes duras e inmutables dentro de las cuales toda creación debe navegar; por otro lado, nosotros, como seres en el pináculo de la creación (aunque a veces tenemos que preguntarnos si eso es cierto…), albergamos fuerzas poderosas que podemos aprovechar dentro de nosotros mismos para desterrar las curvas de distribución o fórmulas que de otro modo podrían intentar asignarnos una condición mediocre o trágica en la vida.

Nada de esto es ningún intento para minimizar la difícil situación de millones de personas que sufren en el planeta. Todos somos “perdedores” en un área u otra en la vida. La clave para entender la paradoja de las estadísticas frente al poder de nuestras mentes está contenida en la oración bien conocida: aceptar lo que no podemos cambiar con serenidad, tener el valor de cambiar lo que se pueda, y la sabiduría para reconocer la diferencia.
