Over the past few years, the siren call of the gig economy has captivated the imagination and creativity of young adults. The lure of “being your own boss,” “setting your own hours,” and the promise of having the freedom to travel the world while you pursue your “dream job” is too much for many of them to resist.
For many dreamers coming of age, the enticement of immediate income and flexible work hours, along with the chance to skip college with all its debt obligation, is seductively appealing.
Certainly, the rewards of such a lifestyle are undeniable. However, for their own long-term benefit, those who decide to carve out their place in the gig economy must consider the challenges and the too-good-to-be-true aspects of this approach to earning a living.
Without wishing to rain on anyone’s daydream parade, let’s consider some of the potential hurdles that an aspiring entrepreneur might have to face.
By definition, a gig career is very unlike the stable, predictable full-time jobs that creatives abhor. The income from gig work, especially at the onset, is sometimes incredibly volatile at best and nonexistent at worst. Budgeting can feel like we’re building a rickety house of cards that can easily be blown down by a gust of temporary poverty.
After all, gig workers are at least likely to have rent and other self-sufficiency obligations. When income falters, the resulting stress can be “taxing,” which has nothing to do with paying taxes.
Oh, wait…yes it does. There’s that pesky burden of having to pay taxes on whatever income we manage to eke out at the beginning of our journey.
Young people with little or no experience in the traditional workplace might dismiss the importance of health insurance, retirement plans, sick pay, and vacation benefits. Social security checks and 401k distributions may be considered too far over the horizon to concern young gig entrepreneurs. Planning for the future is not even possible when income projections are nonviable.
Seekers of the gig lifestyle may be intent on developing a balanced personal life. But a common feature of the gig life is social isolation, which often precedes bouts of loneliness. This contrasts with the experience of traditional company employees who typically develop a social network. This matrix of friendships and amicable relationships can, in turn, provide an emotional safety net and promote mental health, both of which are relatively rare in the world of the resolute gig enterpriser.
Finally, those who admirably decide to forge their own path forward toward their chosen vocation would be wise to consider the ramifications of forgoing a traditional college education. They must contend with the social pressures and expectations of those who unfairly judge a young person’s worth by their level of formal higher education. The critics fail to recall that some of this country’s most successful entrepreneurs either dropped out of college or simply never attended. Admittedly, however, the cohort of truly affluent gig entrepreneurs with little or no college is relatively small.
Gig workers often relinquish the opportunities afforded by the natural networking opportunities that are part of the college campus experience. Budding entrepreneurs must be incredibly effective at creating their own education and skill-development programs since there is no employer sending them off to classes for training. On the other hand, they might want to consider at least enrolling in college classes that could render their gig work more profitable.
The potential for sheer exhaustion and threats to the mental health of gig workers will lurk in the background, ready to pounce on those who find themselves in over their heads.
However, with fierce determination, resilience—and yes, a measure of good luck—the hurdles that confront young entrepreneurial enthusiasts can serve to harden them to the pressures that inevitably conspire to derail their dreams.
Having a successful gig career is entirely possible. There are plenty of outstanding, self-motivated role models who have flourished. But none of them would tell us that it was smooth and easy. They would sit us down and warn us that the path to gigdom is fraught and laden with unsettling surprises, such as the occasional setback or catastrophe.
But they would also assure us that it was all worth it.

En los últimos años, el canto de sirena de la economía informal ha cautivado la imaginación y la creatividad de los adultos jóvenes. El atractivo de “ser su propio jefe”, “fijar su propio horario” y la promesa de tener la libertad de viajar por el mundo mientras persiguen el “trabajo de sus sueños” es demasiado para que muchos de ellos se resistan.
Para muchos soñadores que llegan a la mayoría de edad, la tentación de un ingreso inmediato y un horario de trabajo flexible, junto con la posibilidad de saltarse la universidad con todas sus obligaciones de deuda, es seductoramente atractiva.
Sin duda, las recompensas de un estilo de vida así son innegables. Sin embargo, para su propio beneficio a largo plazo, aquellos que deciden forjarse un papel en la economía informal deben considerar los desafíos y los aspectos demasiado-buenos-para-ser-verdad de este enfoque para ganarse la vida.
Sin querer aguar la fiesta de los sueños de nadie, consideremos algunos de los posibles obstáculos que un aspirante a emprendedor podría tener que enfrentar.
Por definición, una carrera “gig” es muy diferente a los trabajos estables y predecibles de tiempo completo que los creativos aborrecen. Los ingresos que se generan por este tipo de trabajo, especialmente al principio, a veces son increíblemente volátiles en el mejor de los casos e inexistentes en el peor. Hacer un presupuesto puede parecer como si estuviéramos construyendo un castillo de naipes desvencijado que puede derrumbarse fácilmente ante una ráfaga de pobreza temporal.
Después de todo, es probable que los trabajadores “gig” tengan que pagar, por lo menos, su alquiler y otras obligaciones de autosuficiencia. Cuando los ingresos flaquean, el estrés resultante puede ser agotador.
Los jóvenes con poca o ninguna experiencia en el lugar de trabajo tradicional pueden desestimar la importancia del seguro médico, los planes de jubilación, el pago por enfermedad y los beneficios de vacaciones. Los cheques de la seguridad social y las distribuciones de cuentas 401k pueden considerarse demasiado lejanos como para preocupar a los jóvenes empresarios “gig”. Planificar para el futuro ni siquiera es posible cuando las proyecciones de ingresos no son viables.
Los que buscan un estilo de vida de trabajo temporal pueden tener la intención de desarrollar una vida personal equilibrada, pero una característica común de la vida de trabajo temporal es el aislamiento social, que a menudo precede a episodios de soledad. Esto contrasta con la experiencia de los empleados de empresas tradicionales, que suelen desarrollar una red social. Los críticos no recuerdan que algunos de los empresarios más exitosos de este país abandonaron la universidad o simplemente nunca asistieron. Sin embargo, es cierto que la cohorte de empresarios de trabajo temporal verdaderamente ricos con poca o ninguna educación universitaria es relativamente pequeña.
Los trabajadores “gig” frecuentemente renuncian a las oportunidades que les ofrece la creación de redes de contactos naturales que forman parte de la experiencia universitaria. El potencial de agotamiento absoluto y las amenazas a la salud mental de los trabajadores “gig” acechan en un segundo plano. Estos retos pueden abalanzarse sobre aquellos que se sientan abrumados ??por la situación.
Sin embargo, con una determinación feroz, resiliencia (y sí, una dosis de buena suerte), los obstáculos que enfrentan los jóvenes entusiastas emprendedores pueden servir para endurecerlos ante las presiones que inevitablemente conspiran para descarrilar sus sueños.
Tener una carrera “gig” exitosa es totalmente posible. Hay muchos modelos a seguir destacados y automotivados que han prosperado. Pero ninguno de ellos nos diría que fue fácil y sin complicaciones. Nos harían sentarnos frente a ellos y nos advertirían que el camino hacia el mundo “gig” está plagado de sorpresas inquietantes como, por ejemplo, algún que otro contratiempo o catástrofe.
Pero también nos asegurarían que todo valía la pena.
