April is the month that is generally associated with Easter, that season that celebrates the opening of flower buds and new life. The name of the month is believed to be related to the Latin verb aperire—to open—from which the word aperture, as in a camera lens system, is derived. The connection is much more obvious in Spanish, in which the verb “to open” is abrir, and the month of April is known as abril.
This month of April is a time to consider all the benefits of opening things: our eyes, ears, minds, hearts and thoughts. It is a time to open the windows and let the fresh air of new ideas circulate through our plans and wishes. It’s the time to open the doors to allow latent opportunities into the sanctuaries of our lives and give them a hearing. Besides getting our taxes done and out of the way, once and for all, April is a time to explore our plans for the upcoming summer season that can’t arrive too soon. This is the month for reconciling our New Year’s resolutions with our progress so far. During the month of April, we can renew relationships in parallel with the renewal of our spirits and of life itself as it awakens from its magical state of dormancy—just as we should, though in our case dormancy is more self-inflicted than “magical.”
April is the month that serves as a gateway into the balminess of the weather and the blossoming forth of life. This manifestation of the source of all living things strives to express itself fully before it must, once again, give way to the cold winds of autumn and the snow of winter (OK, not too much snow here in Ventura County). According to Greek mythology, Demeter, goddess of the harvest, would have to give up her daughter Persephone to the underworld every year as summer faded into fall.

Abril es el mes que generalmente se relaciona con la Pascua, esa temporada que celebra el abrir de los capullos y nueva vida. Se cree que el nombre del mes está relacionado con el verbo latino aperire—o sea, abrir. En español, la conexión entre abrir y abril es obvia (no tanto en inglés).
Este mes de abril es la oportunidad para tomar en cuenta todos los beneficios de que las cosas que se abran: nuestros ojos, oídos, mentes, corazones y pensamientos. Es la oportunidad para abrir las ventanas y permitir que el aire fresco circule a través de nuestros planes y deseos. Es la ocasión para que las puertas se abran y dejamos que oportunidades latentes pasen a los santuarios de nuestras vidas para examinarlas y cuestionar su importancia. Además de finalizar y entregar nuestro reporte de impuestos, de una vez por todas, abril es la oportunidad para explorar nuestros planes para el verano que se aproxima y que no queremos que se tarde. Este es el mes para compaginar nuestras resoluciones de año nuevo con nuestro progreso hasta ahora. Durante este mes de abril, podemos reanudar las relaciones con otros mientras se reanudan nuestras almas y la misma vida al mismo tiempo que se despierta de su estado mágicamente latente—así como lo deberíamos hacer nosotros, no obstante que en nuestro caso esa latencia es auto-infligida más que “mágica”.
Abril es el mes que sirve como una puerta al calor y el florecer de la vida. Esta manifestación de la fuente de todo lo vivo se esfuerza por expresarse plenamente antes de, una vez más, abrir paso para los vientos fríos de otoño y las nieves de invierno (está bien, no hay mucha nieve aquí en el Condado de Ventura). Según la mitología griega, Deméter, diosa de la cosecha, tenía que entregar a su hija Perséfone al infierno cada año cuando el verano se entregaba al otoño.
