The current dilemma for the Republican Party is “The Donald.”  The both famous and infamous (depending on your perspective) Donald Trump is apparently an embarrassment from which many of the Republican candidates are trying to distance themselves, as if he were crackling with radioactivity. Trump may be surging in preliminary polls, but this is because he knows how to market himself. He is cunningly playing on people’s fears of what they perceive as a wave — or a “flood” — of immigrants, specifically Mexican. Ironically, in a July 9, 2015, Washington Post editorial*, renowned columnist Dana Milbank reports that Trump himself once accused Pat Buchanan, a rival nominee for the Reform Party platform during a run for the 2000 presidential election, of being anti-immigrant and “racist.” Mr. Trump knows where the votes are at any given time.

In this same article, Milbank claims that Trump is the monster that the Republicans themselves have created. The ultra-conservative tea party-oriented factions have set the stage for a thorough bashing of immigrants — particularly Mexican and other Latin American immigrants who penetrate the southern border — so that Trump’s ideology is merely an extension of that rhetoric. It is conceivable that the “Rise of Trump” could initiate the disintegration of the Republican Party run for the presidency (again) as we watch them trip over themselves and fracture under the pressures of agendas at war with each other.  The Grand Old Party does not seem to remember the self-inflicted tragedy that befell it in California as a consequence of Republican Governor Pete Wilson’s embrace of Proposition 187, a 1994 ballot initiative that was perceived as a law deeply insulting to the emerging Latino voting bloc.  The California Republican Party paid — and continues to pay dearly — for that faux pas.

Yes, there are criminals in every population. But the Trumps in our system of government don’t want Americans to see that the vast majority of Latin American immigrants have an impressive work ethic and keep the wheels of our economy turning smoothly. Indeed, they are ambassadors of a confluence of rich cultures that stretch back centuries. They actually have much to teach us — about agriculture, art, music, dance, language and family relations — if we would just stop spending so much time denying them their dignity at the same time that we invite them to work in our factories, our yards and our homes, as we entrust to them the care of our children and welcome them onto our orchards and farms to harvest our food.

Meanwhile…the Democrats have their own set of serious internal concerns for the upcoming presidential race. It’s going to be an interesting sixteen months.

El dilema actual del Partido Republicano es “El Donald”.  El famoso y al mismo tiempo infame (dependiendo de tu perspectiva) Donald Trump es, aparentemente, una vergüenza de la cual muchos de los candidatos republicanos están tratando de distanciarse, como si él estuviera chisporroteando de la radioactividad.  Puede que el encanto de Trump sí se esté hinchándo en las votaciones preliminares, pero eso se debe a que él sabe como publicitarse.  Con astucia, está fomentando los miedos de la gente respecto a lo que se percibe como una oleada—o “inundación”—de inmigrantes, específicamente mexicanos.  Irónicamente, en un editorial del Washington Post del 9 de julio de 2015, el renombrado columnista Dana Milbank nos informa que el mismo Trump había acusado a Pat Buchanan, un rival para la nominación del Partido Reformista durante los preparativos para las elecciones presidenciales en el año 2000, de ser anti-inmigrante y “racista”.  El Sr. Trump sí sabe en donde están los votos en cualquier momento dado.

En este mismo artículo, Milbank afirma que Trump es el monstruo que los mismos republicanos habían creado.  Las facciones orientadas hacia el muy conservativo Partido del Té han preparado el terreno para una cruel golpiza política de inmigrantes—sobre todo mexicanos y otros inmigrantes latinoamericanos que penetran la frontera sureña—así que la ideología de Trump es una mera extensión de esa retórica.  Es concebible que “El Ascenso de Trump” sea capaz de iniciar la desintegración del intento del Partido Republicano en las elecciones presidenciales (otra vez) mientras los miramos tropezando el uno con el otro y fracturando bajo las presiones de las guerras entre los varios intereses.  Tal parece que el “Gran Viejo Partido” no se acuerda de la auto-infligida tragedia que le cayó encima en California como consecuencia del apoyo del gobernador Pete Wilson para la Proposición 187, una iniciativa en 1994 que fuera percibida como una ley profundamente ofensiva para la el bloque votante de latinos que en ese entonces surgía.  El partido republicano pagó—y sigue pagando caro—por esa metedura de pata.

Sí, es cierto, hay criminales en cada población.  Pero los “Trumpes” en nuestro sistema de gobierno no quieren que los americanos entiendan que la gran mayoría de los inmigrantes latinoamericanos poseen un formidable ética laboral y mantienen activo el buen funcionamiento de las ruedas de nuestro sistema económico.  De  hecho, son los embajadores de una confluencia de ricas culturas que abarcan varios siglos.  De verdad, tienen mucho que enseñarnos—sobre la agricultura, el arte, la música, el baile, el idioma y relaciones familiares—si tan solo dejáramos de gastar tanto tiempo negándoles su dignidad al mismo tiempo que los invitamos a trabajar en nuestras fabricas, nuestras propiedades y hogares, mientras les encargamos con el cuidado de nuestros hijos y les damos la bienvenida a nuestros huertos y campos para que cosechen nuestros alimentos.

Mientras tanto…los demócratas tienen su propio estuche de serias preocupaciones respecto al próximo concurso para la presidencia.  Los próximos dieciséis meses van a ser muy interesantes.
