Previously I was not known to be a pessimistic person by my friends and colleagues. Quite the contrary. They know me as someone who is forward-looking and generally optimistic about life.
Until recently.
Just over three years ago, I breathed a sigh of relief—not so much because Joe Biden had won the presidency, but rather because Donald Trump had lost.
However, by that time Trump had already primed his supporters to reject the possibility that he could lose. That Biden’s win was not exactly a landslide only served to infuriate his base as they disregarded all evidence supporting the results of the election.
The fact that the courts had dismissed over 50 lawsuits alleging election fraud did not deter Trump’s ardent proponents. Their explosive anger culminated in the violent January 6, 2021, insurrection that millions of us witnessed on live video. This was no “harmless tourist event,” as some lawmakers have conveyed in their shameless efforts to gaslight us as if we were hopelessly gullible.
This time around, our legal institutions were robust enough to resist Trump’s treason and flagrant attempts to undermine the rule of law and the Constitution.
But now, three years after that national nightmare, storm clouds are evident on the horizon. Menacingly, they are growing darker and drawing closer while Trump looms as the probable Republican presidential candidate. My natural sense of optimism about our country is flickering and threatening to extinguish itself.
As it turns out, I’m far from being alone. And I may be guilty of not being pessimistic enough. Perhaps we need to pay some attention to the “preppers”—those who are preparing for scenarios that only the lucidly pessimistic can imagine.
The preppers are not irrational. They are not pathologically pessimistic. But they are envisioning the inevitability of a doomed country—indeed, a doomed world—whether Donald Trump wins or loses the 2024 election.
Let’s unpack this and study the pieces that we pull out of the box.
The preppers are preparing for the literal collapse of society in the wake of the upcoming election. They are assuming that we will be on our own, without government assistance, as our public services and infrastructure implode. As far as they are concerned, we will need to prepare ourselves to survive in a dystopian world that at the moment we dare not imagine.
They figure that if Trump wins, he will be more knowledgeable about the levers of power at his disposal in his second term. He will deconstruct the legal and political frameworks that made us a great power on the world stage. He will see to it that neither the courts nor Congress will be capable of thwarting his worst impulses, as they did repeatedly during his first term.
Trump may win the election, not despite the criminal charges against him, but rather because of them. For Trump, every conviction is a victory, proving that he is both martyr and messiah—the sacrificial lamb who suffers for his bereft followers.
Trump has vowed a reign of vengeance. He has promised to tear down the health insurance, established under the Obama administration, that has benefitted millions of American citizens. He has sworn to jail his political enemies. He is plotting to deport millions of immigrants deemed to be here illegally—in which case we can say goodbye to fresh produce and to the indispensable skills of these workers we see on construction sites and in our manicured yards.
Trump has disparaged NATO and seems bent on destroying this alliance that has defended Europe since shortly after the end of World War II.
He has expressed unabashed admiration for some of the most vicious autocrats on the planet. He obviously wishes to emulate them, even if that means trashing the U.S. Constitution, for which he has nothing but disdain. This would naturally lead to an avowal from him to cancel future presidential elections and remain President for Life. His loyalists and armed mobs will ensure his reign. American democracy, then, will have been extinguished.
But what if Trump does not win? The preppers imagine that after a bout of predictable election violence and possible mayhem at the polls in late 2024, the enraged extremist masses would quickly refer to their “Lessons Learned and Best Practices” manuals written after the failed capitol insurrection.
Preppers predict, perhaps perspicaciously, that the aggrieved voters, convinced once again that the election was “rigged,” will rampage throughout the country. But this time, their lethal, ruinous frenzy will bring out the millions of weapons that they have been storing for just this purpose: to install and retain Donald Trump once again in the White House, “come hell or high water.”
The hell and high water and “all means necessary” that will be implemented, according to preppers, presages the beginning of the end of the American society that we have constructed, painfully at times, over nearly 250 years. In other words, say the preppers, we are facing the very real threat of the collapse of the fabric of democracy that has held us together as Americans over the past two centuries.
Numerous distinguished journalists, foreign policy and national security officials, Chris Christie, Liz Cheney, Adam Kinzinger, Hillary Clinton, President Biden himself, and a host of other outstanding Democrats and Republicans are warning us. They are all sounding the alarm for a sleepwalking America that fails to understand the grim threat of a second Trump presidency.
The fate of the United States of America is very much in the balance at this time. The country is teetering dangerously on the knife’s edge, with the continuation of our democracy on one side and the dark abyss of dictatorship, theocracy, and autocracy on the other.
We won’t be able to say that we weren’t warned. In less than one year, the matter will be in our hands.
Could we really witness the collapse of the U.S.?
The former Secretary of State appointed by President George W. Bush, Condoleezza Rice, has hinted at an ominous future ahead of us. She stated that other countries that have had a “Trump experience” survived, but “not without great violence.”
Perhaps the preppers have a point.

Preparándonos Para el Colapso de la Sociedad

Anteriormente, mis amigos y colegas no me consideraban una persona pesimista. Todo lo contrario. Me conocen como una persona con visión de futuro y, en general, optimista sobre la vida.
Hasta hace poco.
Hace poco más de tres años, suspiré aliviado, no tanto porque Joe Biden hubiera ganado la presidencia, sino porque Donald Trump había perdido.
Sin embargo, para entonces Trump ya había preparado a sus seguidores para que rechazaran la posibilidad de perder. El hecho de que la victoria de Biden no fuera exactamente aplastante sólo sirvió para enfurecer a su base, que hizo caso omiso de toda evidencia que respaldara los resultados de las elecciones.
El hecho de que los tribunales hubieran descartado más de 50 demandas que alegaban fraude electoral no disuadió a los fervientes defensores de Trump. Su explosiva ira culminó en la violenta insurrección del 6 de enero de 2021, que millones de nosotros presenciamos en video en vivo. Este no fue un “evento turístico inofensivo”, como lo han descrito algunos legisladores en sus descarados esfuerzos por engañarnos como si fuéramos irremediablemente crédulos.

Mi sentido natural de optimismo sobre nuestro país parpadea y amenaza con extinguirse.
Resulta que estoy lejos de estar solo. Y puedo ser culpable de no ser lo suficientemente pesimista. Quizás debamos prestar algo de atención a los “preparadores”, aquellos que se están preparando para resultados que sólo los lúcidamente pesimistas pueden imaginar.
Los preparadores no son irracionales. No son patológicamente pesimistas. Pero están imaginando la inevitabilidad de un país condenado (de hecho, un mundo condenado), ya sea que Donald Trump gane o pierda las elecciones de 2024.
Desempaquemos todo esto y estudiemos las piezas que sacamos de la caja.
Los preparadores se están preparando para el colapso literal de la sociedad tras las próximas elecciones. Suponen que estaremos solos, sin asistencia gubernamental, a medida que nuestros servicios públicos y nuestra infraestructura implosionen. En lo que a ellos respecta, necesitaremos prepararnos para sobrevivir en un mundo distópico que de momento no nos atrevemos a imaginar.
Calculan que si Trump gana, tendrá más conocimientos sobre las palancas de poder a su disposición en su segundo mandato. Trump puede ganar las elecciones, no a pesar de los cargos penales en su contra, sino gracias a ellos. Para Trump, cada convicción es una victoria, lo que demuestra que es un mártir tanto como un mesías, el cordero sacrificado que sufre por sus despojados seguidores.
Trump ha prometido un reinado de venganza. Ha prometido derribar el seguro médico, establecido bajo la administración Obama, que ha beneficiado a millones de ciudadanos estadounidenses. Ha jurado encarcelar a sus enemigos políticos. Está planeando deportar a millones de inmigrantes que se considera que están aquí ilegalmente, en cuyo caso podemos decir adiós a las verduras y frutas frescas y a las habilidades indispensables de estos trabajadores que vemos en las obras de construcción y en nuestros cuidados patios.
Trump ha menospreciado la OTAN y parece empeñado en destruir esta alianza que ha defendido a Europa desde poco después del final de la Segunda Guerra Mundial.
Ha expresado descarada admiración por algunos de los autócratas más crueles del planeta. Obviamente desea emularlos, incluso si eso significa destrozar la Constitución de Estados Unidos, por la que no siente más que desdén. Naturalmente, esto llevaría a una declaración por su parte de cancelar futuras elecciones presidenciales y seguir siendo el presidente vitalicio. Sus leales y sus turbas armadas asegurarán su reinado. Entonces, la democracia estadounidense se habrá extinguido.
¿Pero qué pasa si Trump no gana? Los preparadores imaginan que después de un episodio de violencia electoral predecible y un posible caos en las urnas a finales de 2024, las masas extremistas enfurecidas rápidamente consultarían sus manuales de “Lecciones Aprendidas y Mejores Prácticas” escritos después de la fallida insurrección del capitolio.

El destino de los Estados Unidos de América está en gran medida en juego en este momento. El país se tambalea peligrosamente al filo de la navaja, con la continuación de nuestra democracia por un lado y el oscuro abismo de la dictadura, la teocracia y la autocracia por el otro.
No podremos decir que no fuimos advertidos. En menos de un año el asunto estará en nuestras manos.
¿Podríamos realmente presenciar el colapso de Estados Unidos?
La ex Secretaria de Estado nombrada por el Presidente George W. Bush, Condoleezza Rice, ha insinuado que nos espera un futuro siniestro. Afirmó que otros países que han tenido una “experiencia Trump” sobrevivieron, pero “no sin gran violencia”.
Quizás los preparadores tengan razón.
