Some fortunate souls are able to work from home during this pandemic, which seems to have no end. If some of the more pessimistic health experts are right, it just may not.
On the other hand, there are many of us who don’t have the luxury of working from home. We may be a service provider whose livelihood was suddenly yanked away. We might be in the retail industry, which in some quarters is struggling to breathe and may not survive an environment that is essentially hostile to its products (think clothing and fashion) or to sales in general (for traditional summer fun, back-to-school, Black Friday and Christmas), which are completely unpredictable at this time. We might have a gig that flies below the radar and renders us ineligible for unemployment. We might receive stimulus money (maybe even a delayed paper check with the boss’s signature!), only to have it spirited away by a creditor when we desperately need it.
But whether we’re working from home or panicking over our next move, many of us have a surfeit of time on our hands, if nothing else because there’s practically nowhere to go.
First order of business, of course, is to anchor our existence in whatever measure of security we can muster. Once that is accomplished, many of us must figure out what to do with ourselves at this particular time. The choices are myriad. We may find ourselves at a fork in the figurative road. Do we take the easy turn toward despair and resort to old coping behaviors that had proved to be devastating in the past? Or do we find a glimmer of hope in these circumstances and take full advantage of this unforeseen opportunity? What can we set out to learn that will benefit us, whether this state of affairs glides to a bumpy finish, or continues indefinitely, which is entirely possible under the worst-case scenarios being presented? With the Internet that so many of us depend on for information, entertainment and communication, why not seize this golden opportunity to use this technology and pursue something that will benefit us and others in some way down the road—and maybe not that far down the road. In other words, let’s “strike while the iron is hot,” or “seize the day” whenever we are able, as the Roman poet Horace exhorted us back in 23 BCE. We could think about starting a blog or even an online business, for example.
Time is precious, even in the midst of a pandemic. We can squander it, or we can invest in this gift of the present moment for a better future for ourselves and the ones we love.

Pasándose el Tiempo

Algunas almas afortunadas pueden trabajar desde casa durante esta pandemia, la cual parece no tener fin. Si algunos de los expertos en salud más pesimistas tienen la razón, es posible que así sea.
Por otro lado, hay muchos de nosotros que no tenemos el lujo de trabajar desde casa. Puede que seamos un proveedor de servicios cuyo sustento fuera repentinamente retirado. Podríamos estar en la industria de las ventas, que en algunos sectores está batallando por su vida y puede que no sobreviva en un entorno que es esencialmente hostil a sus productos (piense en la ropa y la moda) o en las ventas en general (para la diversión tradicional de verano, de vuelta a escuela, Black Friday y Navidad), que son completamente impredecibles en este momento. Podríamos tener un trabajo no tradicional que vuela por debajo del radar y nos hace inelegibles para el desempleo. Es posible que recibamos dinero del estímulo (¡tal vez incluso un cheque en papel retrasado con la firma del jefe!), solo para que un acreedor se lo lleve cuando lo necesitamos desesperadamente.
Pero ya sea que estemos trabajando desde casa o entrando en pánico ante la incertidumbre de nuestro próximo paso, muchos de nosotros tenemos un exceso de tiempo entre manos, quizás porque prácticamente no hay a dónde ir.
El primer orden del día, por supuesto, es anclar nuestra existencia en cualquier medida de seguridad que se pueda. Una vez que eso se logre, deberíamos descubrir qué hacer con nosotros mismos en este momento en particular. Las opciones son innumerables. Podemos encontrarnos en una bifurcación del camino figurativo. ¿Giramos fácilmente hacia la desesperación y recurrimos a viejos mecanismos de supervivencia que habían demostrado ser devastadores en el pasado? ¿O encontramos un rayito de oportunidad en estas circunstancias y aprovechamos al máximo este regalo imprevisto? ¿A qué podemos dedicarnos a aprender para sacar algún beneficio, ya sea que estas circunstancias se deslicen hacia un final difícil o continúen indefinidamente, lo cual es completamente posible según los peores escenarios presentados? Con el Internet del cual muchos dependemos para obtener información, entretenimiento y comunicación, ¿por qué no aprovechar esta oportunidad dorada para buscar algo utilizando esta tecnología que nos beneficie a nosotros y a otros de alguna manera en el futuro? Y tal vez no tan lejos en el futuro. En otras palabras, “aprovechemos el día” siempre que podamos, así como el poeta romano Horacio nos exhortó en el año 23 a. C. Podríamos pensar en iniciar un “blog” o hasta un negocio en línea, por ejemplo.
El tiempo es precioso, incluso en medio de una pandemia. Podemos desperdiciarlo, o podemos invertir en este regalo, el momento actual, para un futuro mejor para nosotros y nuestros seres queridos.
